National Cup Final: Herne Bay United 3 - 6 Middlesbrough
In the third Herne Bay United Final of the day it was the seniors turn to take to the floor, with the hope of equalling the Under 13's and winning the Cup. United have held the National Cup Title for four consecutive seasons and were looking for a fifth. The challengers were Middlesbrough RHC a team that has come of age over the last few seasons and were looking for revenge over just losing out on the Premier League title to United earlier in the season. United were without Captain Simon Hosking and first team regular Dendy Hudson due to other commitments. United drafted in two top performers from the HBU 2 side Steve Clarke and the experience of Nick Barton. United started strong and were playing well and were first on the score sheet with a quick counter attack with Joel De Figueiredo finishing well. United were looking strong and the game settled for a period. However with failed chances and United not pushing as normal attacking the teams they face but were sitting back and Middlesbrough sensing the opportunity began to push United with shots raining in on 'keeper David Garlick making some fine saves to be finally beaten unexpectedly after an onslaught, the finish by Owen Stewart.
United were again kept pushed back and Middlesbrough capitalised and went 1-2 in front and United now started upping the pressure taking more chances just failed to capitalise in the penalty area. United were given a power play after star Middlesbrough main player Owen Stewart, Junior National Player of the year, checked United's Barker into the boards on a breakaway. United's Barker picked up an injury from this incident and Neil Austin failed from the spot and United looked like chances just weren't going to fall without a fight. United thought they had equalised after a penalty was awarded; Barker netting the first only to be ordered to retake after a infringement from a United player before the penalty was taken, and Barker failed to finish the second time by hitting the post. Middlesbrough had the lead at half time.
United came out in the second half with a change in defensive tactics which unsettled things immediately but with such a defence it can also create risks and though United had the first chances with Daniel Palmer repeatedly denying them and ending in Middlesbrough taking the advantage from a well executed counter. United never give up but were not looking like the hungry side of normal and the game was more bullish with heavy over played tackles not welcome in Roller Hockey from both teams. United came back to 2-3 through Austin and showed some glimmers of hope, but Middlesbrough again opened the gap and left United fighting to just have a chance of getting back into the game. Middlesbrough heaped on the continuing pressure never sitting back and took a further well taken goal and United were on the ropes at 2-5. Again United were given a hope through Figueiredo finishing from the spot. United were awarded a penalty but again Barker hit the frame and was not looking strong after a second knock to the same leg by a unsighted block. United were scrappy and were not taking any chances, looking frustrated and almost resigned to the fact of accepting their fate Barker showing his and being sin binned for two with six minutes left and just as United were back to five players a second blue was awarded to Steve Clarke and Middlesbrough finished from the free hit to make it a convincing 3-6 win and the National Cup in their hands. Middlesbrough were the best we have seen them and deserved to take the cup, today they out played United and showed they will again be playing for the Ultimate trophy the Premier League title and to take this title from United next season.
Brendan Barker said after the game: "We are gutted not to have won today. We would like to win every match we play but today we were not in it, let's not take anything away from our opposition as they were the best team on the day. Now we will take a step back and take a few weeks well earned break. We must take the positives, we're happy to have retained National Premier League title which is our ultimate goal, and will be again next season. We have players who have been playing with injuries, I will be seeing the physio this week in the hope I can be fit for the National training. This season has been long, and considering the Premier League title was decided four weeks ago, it has been difficult to keep players motivated and training consistently. My own focus now is to get fit for England duty."
Next Season 2010-2011 Premier League is expected to commence late September/ October and will be Herne Bay United's final season at the Pier Pavilion before moving to a new purpose built venue at Herne Bay High for the September 2011.
Team List: David Garlick, Jay Williamson (gks), Neil Austin (1), Brendan Barker, Nick Barton (c), Joel de Figueiredo (2), Joe Singleton, Karl Smith, Myles Barker, Steve Clarke
Other News: Herne Bay United has begun organising for season 2010-2011 season with two Portuguese signings, Luis Goncalves and Nuno da Silva who have been training with the team prior to the close of the season and impressed. Herne Bay United said: "We welcome these new additions to our first team squad and they are looking forward to joining our campaign."

National Cup Finals: Under 13 and Under 15
Herne Bay United were in three Cup Finals on Saturday. The first was at 10.45 against Peterborough in the Under 15's. Peterborough were clear favourites going into the match, all of their players (bar one) were in their final year as U15's, whereas HBU's team was a very young team, most of whom have another two or three years left in the U15's. Most people were expecting Peterborough to thrash United's young side by double figures. However United were determined not to let that happen. They defended resolutely and at half time were losing 2-0.
The second half saw United come close on numerous occasions, but for some fine goalkeeping by the Peterborough keeper United would have been back in the game. However it wasn't to be and as United had to chase the game Peterborough scored three more unanswered goals to run out winners 5-0.
HBU manager Phil McVey said after the game: "They have all done extremely well. The Peterborough players are all twice the size of ours, and a good couple of years older as well, so to push them as hard as we did was a phenomenal effort. The future's bright for our team, we will be looking at winning it next year. We don't lose any players, whereas Peterborough lose all but one of theirs. I'm very pleased with our performance and they should all be proud of themselves."
Team: Guy Osborne (gk) Katie McVey, Josh Emslie, Keir Maeers, Ashley Barton, George Kohler, Alice Osborne, Lewis Greenwood, Alex Mount
The second Final involving HBU was for the U13's National Cup. HBU were facing Bury and it was going to be a very tough encounter; HBU had played Bury two weeks earlier in the Club Championship and lost 7-3. They were determined not to let that happen again. United Manager Phil McVey asked the team to play a defensive system which they had never practiced, this involved three outfield players playing a zonal triangle whilst the fourth man went man to man on Bury's best player. The tactics worked perfectly as United scored first to make it 1-0, Bury hit back almost immediately (1-1), but United kept their discipline in defence and went ahead again to make it 2-1 at halftime. The second half saw United dominate their opponents and in the end ran out comfortable winners 6-3. Following the game manager Phil McVey said: "What an amazing performance by the team!! To a man they all followed instructions, and were a joy to manage. I cannot fault the performance in any way. They looked the technically and tactically superior team today. What a transformation from two weeks ago. I am so proud of what they've done today. They are a credit to the club and themselves and deserve all the plaudits. Whilst all the players were magnificent, Alex Mount was unbelievable for us today. I asked him to man mark Bury's best player for the whole of the game. He did this so well that Bury took their player off. It was the best performance by any player in all the matches today. This team have a very bright future."

Premier League: HBU2 3 - 12 Herne Bay United (Played: Thursday 9 July)
Herne Bay United faced the club's second team last week in their final game of the National Premier League. The game was a formality with the 1st team having secured the title in their previous game but though the result wouldn't change anything being first and second team in the club, player's pride was at stake. United 1 were one player down but with the strongest available six they were at full strength whilst United 2 were two players down. United 1 started calmly, building and working into the game whilst the more experienced and United 2 side sat back and waited for the counter attack chances to materialise. This paid dividends with United 2 drawing first blood through Matt Barton on a current hot streak. But United 1 never panicked and was having most of the possession just failing to produce any serious opportunities but kept the regular player rotations flowing. In the final five minutes of the half United 1 stepped up the pressure slightly and were rewarded by Barker scoring twice, the first with a well created move with an assist from Neil Austin. Half time score was 1-2 United 1 having the advantage.
United 1 would start the second half with the strongest five to heap the pressure on and continuing the rotation of players with the hope of putting the game to bed and capitalising on being the fresher of the two teams. The second half started as expected and United 2 were pinned back for the first five minutes of the half given very little space and it looked like United 1 were enjoying their hockey with three team built goals with all players involved but the finishing coming from Captain Hosking, then Austin and Smith. United 2 were now beginning to look worn and United 1 kept up with the regular rotation. Austin was next with his second of the game and United 1 now had a 16 lead and were looking comfortable, with United 2 only able to notch twice more and United 1 continuing with regular goals and final score 312 to the National Champions.
Manager/Player Phil McVey said after the game: "Both teams played well, United 1 were a little lazy in the first half and we cannot afford for such lapses when it comes to our Cup final in two weeks. United 2 also played well and as instructed, but having two main players out with injury was always going to make things difficult as we wouldn't have their normal rotation and would run out of legs as the game wore on. My attention now falls to trying to ensure we can retain the National Cup on the 24 July and with two first team players unavailable, putting the strongest possible team together for this, and will be considering some exceptional performances by a few players in the second team and am confident we are able and will be ready for the game on the 24th.
Herne Bay United will be playing Middlesbrough on the 24 July at the National Finals day at the Pier Pavilion, Herne Bay at 3:45pm.
Team List:
HBU 2: Jason Robertson, Richard Walker, Nigel Mills, Matt Barton (2), Jon Barton, Steve Clarke (1), Nick Barton (Cap), Garrett Priestley

Kent League: HBU Ultras 5 - 6 Apex (Played: Saturday 3 July)
With the season already decided and Ultras taking the title and Apex securing runners up position, the game was just a formality. It started well with Nick Barton opening the scoring with a wonder goal. The Ultras put pressure back on and Ashley Barton brought the game level but Paul McVey put his team ahead again only for Barker to level it. However Richard Walker scored in last 10 seconds to give Apex the lead at half time.
The second half continued and shortly into the start Nick Barton edged Apex further ahead followed by Barker pulling one back. Shortly after this a low Barker shot took a wicked deflection and Apex's Paul McVey took the full brunt of it in the mouth. Paul was escorted to hospital for treatment. The game continued but had now somewhat lost the heart and ended with Nigel Mills scoring Apex's winner in the final minutes and Ultras suffered their first defeat of the season. Final Score Ultras 5 Apex 6.
Paul McVey suffered severe trauma to the mouth and is looking at a great deal of dental repair work until he will be back to 100%. Paul said on his return from the hospital: "It was an unfortunate incident of our sport and one I have managed to avoid for 35 years and am more angry I was unable to react quick enough but there was just no time. I hope to play in one of our remaining premier games but will be giving the game this week a miss to give my mouth time to recover and not risk any further trauma as ordered by my dentist."

Apex: Jason Robertson, Garrett Priestley (gks), Richard Walker (1), Nigel Mills (1), Jon Barton, Steve Clarke (1), Nick Barton (2), Paul McVey (1)

Kent League: Apex 3 - 7 HBU Ultras (Played: Saturday 19 June)
The two Herne Bay United teams faced each other in the Kent League at the weekend, with both teams possible winners of the title with Ultras in front with no loses and Apex with one draw and the their last remaining fixtures being each other.
The Ultras took the win 3 -7 and the Kent League title with Apex being the current holders. Both teams were missing key players due to injury and Apex didn't make it easy for the younger United side. The Ultras had only conceded three goals this season and Apex doubled that in one game. The game was played in good spirit and with one game left each will the Ultras go the entire campaign without losing a game?
Apex: Jason Robertson, Richard Walker, Matt Barton (2), Jon Barton, Nick Barton (cap) (1), Paul McVey, Garret Preistley
Ultras: Joe Singleton (Cap), Karl Smith (2), Myles Barker (1), Neil Austin (1), Brendan Barker (3), Jay Williamson

Premier League: HBU2 7 - 4 Project 2010 (Played: Sunday 13 June)
HBU 2 also played this weekend and have three remaining games to play to conclude their season. They had a convincing win against Project 2010 giving them some valuable points. Though HBU 2 went 2-0 down early in the game, mid way through the half they found their rhythm and never looked back. HBU2 finished the first half 3-2 up.
HBU2 continued their dominance throughout the second half and sharpness in front of goal with Man of the match Matt Barton getting four which helped HBU 2 to a comfortable 7-4 victory.
The only negative points for HBU2 were the start, a blue card incident for Jon Barton and what looks like a season ending groin injury to captain Phil McVey. HBU2, if they win their next three games, could get fifth dependant on other teams results.

Premier League: Herne Bay United 7 - 6 Middlesbrough (Played: Saturday 12 June)
HBU had a winner takes all game against Middlesbrough RHC, who have been keeping the pressure on United throughout the season and were intent on taking the National League title away from United. United needed a draw to stay on track for retaining the title but a win would have secured the League with a game left to play. A good crowd fuelled the atmosphere with hooters and even a South African vuvuzela and were rewarded with a great match!
United were back to full strength with Simon Hosking in the line up that was far from 100% fit; Neil Austin also carried a hand injury and Brendan Barker with a niggling back injury. All three were in the starting line up with Dendy Hudson and Dave Garlick in goal. United started strongly with an unstoppable deflection by Barker set up by Austin. United looked strong playing the ball around with purpose, but an unsighted shot from Owen Stewart caught Garlick low on the near post put Middlesbrough back in the game and filled with confidence. United continued with a switch in defensive tactics and though with the majority of chances but not all, and both teams' keepers making fine saves, both defences remained strong the game stayed tight. Barker failed to finish his awarded penalty and missed a number of other chances. It was Austin, already with an assist, to step up and give United the lead into the break with four minutes to go.
The second half saw Middlesbrough quick to put the pressure back on with Owen getting his second of the game through a penalty. Barker quickly put United back in front but again failed from the spot to capitalise with the presented situation and increase the lead. Middlesbrough again got a lucky break with a quick equaliser with a shot way wide taking a deflection off a United defender catching Garlick off guard. United again built up play with chances falling to both teams but keepers keeping the game alive. United's captain Hosking was awarded a direct free hit through accumulative team fouls, and he made no mistake and finished confidently again giving United the lead for the fourth time in the game. Middlesbrough again would not lay down and with two quick goals resulting from United defensive errors and well finished by Owen with his hat-trick and captain John Jones saw the advantage swap for the first time and United now chasing. Hosking again brought United back with his second finish from the spot when a strong physical tackle by Marc Rutland saw him sin binned. Again United fell behind when Sam Kay finished a good passing move. The pressure in the closing stages paid dividends and United's experience, after Owen failed his chance to put daylight between them from the spot, and Neil Austin with his second catching Dan Palmer unaware with a flick up and hit putting United level with two minutes to go. United began to hold the ball playing for the draw happy to play safe for the remaining minutes, but a trip and Middlesbrough's third blue card saw United awarded a Direct free hit with a minute to go and Austin confidently beat Palmer for his hat trick in this encounter and which earned him 'man of the match' and United retaining the National Premier League title.
Manager Phil McVey was happy with the result and said: "Middlesbrough played well and made life very difficult. We stayed strong and never gave up and took the win when the chance came to us. Yes, we were not as good as we have been on other occasions but we have won and have been part of an epic game. Yes, on analysis we failed big chances and looking on those failures we still managed the win. We would really like to thank all our sponsors and support we have received this season from J & J recruitment, Capital & County, MTM Drains, Federal Hockey Equipment and Kent County Council for without their support all we have achieved would not be possible."
It is expected over the coming weeks United will be confirming new sponsorship deals for the next season and are looking for other local businesses to support them in continuing to be the team to beat in the UK. United now face HBU 2 in their final game of the League and then no National games until Cup Finals at the Pier Pavilion on 24 July. This is likely to be a rematch of this weekend against Middlesbrough who first have to play Halifax in the Semi final on the 19 June. United will have local Kent League matches on the run up to this dates.

Premier League: Herne Bay United 8 - 5 HBU2 (Played: Sunday 23 May)
Herne Bay United have two teams in the Premier League and they faced each other this weekend on a close but comfortable encounter. United were without first team player Neil Austin after the National Disciplinary Board issued a one match ban from the previous National Cup game to be served in his next game whether that be National Premier League or the National Cup. The upside for United is now Neil Austin will be eligible for the National Cup Final at the Pier on 24 July 2010 as he will have served his ban. United started strongly going two goals in front, captain Simon Hosking with the first and Joel De Figueiredo getting the second, United's goal of the game - a well executed team play with an emphatic volley to finish. Unfortunately United's captain sustained an injury to his hand and was unable to continue for the remainder of the match. United looked in control but it was HBU2 who brought one back through Matt Barton and a second after conceding a penalty shortly afterwards. Barker finished well to restore the goal cushion only for HBU2's Steve Clarke to respond almost immediately again. United remained calm and with two quick goals finished the half 5-2 ahead.
The second half was not so tight to start with, United scored twice through Barker and then took their foot off the gas. HBU2 aware of the opportunities worked against United methodically to score three goals evenly spaced through the half by Richard Walker, Nick Barton and Clarke with his second bringing the score for the game to 7-5, but United upped the tempo and Barker finished in the closing minutes of the game to keep HBU2 at a comfortable distance. Final score HBU 8 5 HBU2.
A Herne Bay United official reported later on the injury to Simon Hosking confirming it to be tissue damage and he will be seeing a specialist over the coming days hoping to speed up the recovery time because the doctor has said it could be between three and six weeks recovery time.
United are currently sitting second in the League with a game in hand with only two league games left to play in the coming weeks, and the National Cup Final closing the season.

Veterans in Berlin
Herne Bay United took on the best veteran sides in Germany over the weekend at a tournament hosted by Olympic Sports Club Berlin. HBU travelled with a full team, and were hopeful of putting on a good performance. HBU are the reigning national veterans champions in this country, and were keen to show they are still a force in Europe. Their first game was against the host side OSC Berlin and United started well, scoring after only 12 seconds. United were playing OK, and were 3-0 up at halftime. The second half saw the English side continue to dominate possession running out comfortable 8-0 winners.
The second game was a much tougher test for United as they took on Heil-Bronn, although United again dominated possession, they were struggling to break-down the German defence. Every time United went ahead they were immediately pegged back. The first half ended at 2-2. The second half picked up where the first half had finished. United had all the possession but could not break through the strong defence; then with 10 minutes left, Heil-Bronn scored to go 2-3 ahead. This galvanised United who picked up the pace of their game. With five minutes left United equalised, then with less than a minute left, United's captain Nick Barton scored to put United 4-3 up. The Germans could not respond, and at the final whistle United had won 4-3.
United's third game was against favourites, and perennial winners of the tournament Iserlohn. There has always been a fierce rivalry between the two teams going back over 25 years. Both sides have always been evenly matched. This game was no different. Iserlohn held the ball well for long periods, as did United. Whilst both teams created some chances, it was the defenders who were on top throughout. At halftime the score was 1-1. United were beginning to tire as it was their third game of the day, and Iserlohn had stepped up the pace, and were beginning to create a few chances. Iserlohn then went 1-2 up with seven minutes left in the match. If United were going to get anything out of the game they had to dig deep. Their efforts appeared to have failed as their German opponents looked solid at the back. However, with only 90 seconds left Joe Wheatley beat two players and flicked the ball into the top corner of the German goal to tie the game at 2-2. The Germans were stunned by the goal, this cost them dear, as Wheatley forced his way through their defence to put United 3-2 up 20 seconds later. Somehow United had managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, and held on to win a thrilling contest.
Other results had gone United's way so they knew the result in their last match against RHC Gera could not affect the result of the tournament. United had won. The English veterans were keen to put on a show and in the final match against Gera, they put on a stunning display of roller hockey, for a ten minute period in the first half their opponents did not touch the ball more than a few times, as the English champions moved the ball around with some great one and two touch play. United ran out comfortable 5-1 winners.
The tournament was over. United had played four and won four. Following the closing ceremony United captain Nick Barton said: "We are thrilled to have won the tournament, it was an honour to be invited to attend, to come here and win is a great achievement. We've met up with a lot of old friends, and we have made some new friends as well."
Herne Bay United's veterans have been making a name for themselves since their arrival on the European veterans scene last year. Immediately following this win, they have been invited to compete in the 'European Veteran Rollerhockey Invitational Cup'. This is a competition held twice a year, a different country hosts each tournament, approximately 16 teams from Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, France, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland and now England compete at the highest level. Club Coach Phil McVey said: "To win like we did in Berlin was exceptional. On top of that we are to compete in the EVRI Cup. There isn't a bigger competition anywhere in the world for the over 35's. The standard of the hockey is incredible. Veterans' hockey is very popular on the continent. With us joining such a prestigious competition, we are spreading the name of Herne Bay United to every corner of the roller hockey world."
HBU Team Garrett Priestley (gk) Nick Barton, Paul McVey, Phil McVey, Richard Walker, Nigel Mills, Jon Barton, Joe Wheatley, and guest player Peter Taylor.

National Cup Semi Final: RHC Invicta 4 - 14 Herne Bay United (Played: Saturday 8 May)

Faversham's recently formed RHC Invicta faced current Cup holders Herne Bay United. The game was always going to be a tense affair with seven of Invicta's selected players being ex-United, who transferred to Invicta in December this season and three from the other club in Herne Bay, and it proved just that. A 300-strong crowd came to see the teams meet and United were slow to start and without usual captain Simon Hosking failed to make an immediate impact on the game and it was Invicta who drew first blood with a well finished slap shot by Invicta's captain Joe Fidock. United remained calm and didn't look worried yet and United's Neil Austin got his first of the game within two minutes. It wasn't long before the intensity showed with Invicta's Liam Holland getting the first Blue of the game for hooking. Brendan Barker failed to make the awarded direct free hit count but soon made up for his miss with his first of the game and put United one up. But within a minute Invicta got level and United openly unhappy with the awarded goal after feeling it went in off the foot of an Invicta player. At this point United knuckled down and went about their work with Barker and Austin both getting four in the first half, Invicta could only reply with one for the awarded Direct Free Hit after United's Myles Barker was sent off with a blue card six seconds from the end of the half. United finished first half 3-8 up and both teams with a blue card apiece.
The second half was a lot more physical with many off the ball fouls going un-noticed with players tempers on the edge and words being exchanged it was only a short time before more penalties and cards were issued. Austin got his fifth goal within the first six minutes of the restart before United got stuck in a section failing to score the chances they were creating and Invicta's second keeper Joel Carnell starting excellently. United's stand in Captain Karl finished a well executed goal to open United's scoring again. Barker then finished twice more within minutes of each other before being sent off for a strong challenge, but showed no argument. United held strong and Invicta failed to score in the power play and soon followed the fourth blue card of the game going to Invicta's Charlie Pughe. United made the extra player count and scored on the Power play with Austin finishing and Hudson getting United's final goal of the game four minutes from time and giving United an 11 goal lead. The game became very slow with so many fouls and the final three minutes took over ten minutes to be played and tempers finally getting the better of a number of player only for United's Neil Austin and Myles Tichband receiving marching order 27 seconds from the end as well as the Invicta Coach and President David White also getting a red card. Invicta were awarded a penalty in the final seconds which Jay Williamson initially saved and openly pleased about feeling he had kept a clean sheet for his second half only for the penalty to be retaken after two Invicta players moved prior to the player striking the ball meaning United should have been awarded a free hit and not the retake; a penalty should only be retaken if a player of the opposition encroaches. Invicta failed to score the second time but a pass made from the rebound secured their fourth of the game and merely only a consolation and losing the semi final by a clear ten goals.
United now progress to the Final which is scheduled for the 24 July 2010 at the Pier Pavilion Herne Bay, but they will be without Neil Austin due to his red card. Captain Karl Smith said after the game: "We're pleased with the result, the majority of the crowd enjoyed the game and we now progress to the final, the only down side and disappointment is we will be without Neil, but we have plenty of available players and must focus on the League and our task of retaining the title."
Team list
RHC Invicta: Dave Beeson, Joe Fidock (Capt)(1), Charlie Pughe (2), Tom White, Danny Butcher (1), Richard Butcher, Myles Tichband, Liam Holland, Lee Chestnutt, Joel Carnell, Manager: Ken Pughe, Coach: David White

Inter Regionals
Local clubs were well represented in the Southern Counties teams competing at the Inter Regional Roller Hockey Championships held at Peterborough over the bank holiday weekend. Saturday saw the under 11 and under 15 age groups take place. The under 11's began strongly against Eastern Counties 1 but eventually lost 8-4. They then had two comprehensive victories, firstly winning 15-1 against Northern Counties and then completing their day with a 15-0 defeat of Eastern Counties 2. They finished in second place.

Premier League: HBU2 3 - 9 Middlesbrough (Played: Sunday 25 April)
HBU veterans faced title contenders Middlesbrough on Sunday morning. United's hopes of causing an upset were quickly dashed as Middlesbrough scored five unanswered goals in the opening ten minutes. United then changed their defence to restricted man-to-man. The change worked and United stopped leaking goals. As the half went on they began to exert some pressure of their own. With two minutes left in the half Nigel Mills scored from close range to make it 1&5.
United were now getting into the game and the second half was a much closer affair. However United could not sustain enough pressure to reduce the deficit. Goals from Richard Walker and Chris Espejo kept United's hope alive, but tw missed penalties from United saw the end of their challenge as Middlesbrough ran out comfortable 39 winners.
Following the game HBU player Phil McVey said: "Well done to Middlesbrough, they deserve the win. Our box defence did not work and they scored five quick goals as a result. Once we changed systems to man-to-man restricted, we did much better, we only conceded four but scored three in this period. As a team we are on a learning curve. Every game we play we adjust our game and tactics. Whilst we are disappointed with the defeat, Middlesbrough are title contenders and a very good side."

Premier League: Herne Bay United 14 - 4 Project 2010 and Herne Bay United 8 - 7 Bury (Played: Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 April)
For what should have been a relatively normal day at the office for Herne Bay United, they were two first team players down this weekend, one stuck in new York due to the Volcanic ash disruptions and the other to illness. For United it should have just been a formality of a game against Project 2010, having beaten them earlier in the league 1-19. However the Project showed the progress they have made coming out to match the Champions in all areas and actually going 0-2 up in the first five minutes. United looked rattled and though Simon Hosking put United on the score sheet, they were yet to settle with a catalogue of errors. Barker was next on the score sheet for United levelling the score and so began the change of momentum for the first half following four goals for United in the final seven minutes and though the Project were better it was United who finished. 6-2 half time.
The second half neither team scored until 15 minutes in, when it was United's Myles Barker who finished an unstoppable back hand to the far top corner.
The Project kept on the pressure with a goal back then United again scored for the Project to only strike blow for blow. United called a time out after which they cranked up the pressure pressing the young team, who will be representing England in the European Championships in Northampton this year for them to crumble. United scored six in the final seven minutes and what looked like a closely fought game now looked as though United were off the gas for the majority of the game to only show what could have been in the final part of the game. The game finished 14-4 for the champions.
The following morning United would be playing Bury, the only team this season to hold United to a draw earlier in the season, were coming to upset United's current run of results and make retaining the League title as difficult for the champions as possible. The game was closely fought from start to finish with United being patient and Bury hoping to catch United on the break. This was the pattern throughout and worked as it kept Bury within striking distance throughout. United were first on the score sheet ten minutes in through Barker and remained in front until six minutes to go when Darren Willis lost his marker and finished well to equalise. United's Joe Singleton brought United straight back in for Bury to not only draw level but to carry the run and take the lead with a minute left. United piled on the pressure to try and equalise before the break and were rewarded with Barker getting his second. First half 3-3.
United came out looking in control in the second half going four goals up two from Hosking, Barker once and Sam Jackson getting his second for the weekend after being out with a knee injury for three months. Bury got one back through a closely called penalty but United stayed strong all the way till eight minutes to go when Bury scored and again converted after being awarded with a second penalty putting United under unwanted pressure at 7-6.
United built the play back up when Barker was fouled and then scored to give United a two-goal cushion from the free hit. United again held the ball but caused unnecessary tension when Barker and Jackson failed to score opportunities. Bury again pulled one back but United didn't make the same mistake and held the ball till the final whistle and taking the three points.
United remain top of the table and will be watching closely when closest rivals Middlesbrough play Bury at Bury in the coming weeks; if Middlesbrough drop three points United will be close to achieving their goal of retaining the League Title.
United's manager Phil McVey said: "Overall this was a very satisfying performance by the whole team. We played with discipline, that was the key to the victory. Whilst all of the players did ok, there was one exception, Joe Singleton had I would say his best game since he came into the first team. His work ethic was second to none, he moved the ball around well, and he played a very disciplined intelligent game. I was very impressed."
United's next game is against new local team Faversham's RHC Invicta in the National Cup semi final at the Pier Pavilion on the 8th May at 7:30pm.
HBU's Team list for the weekend games: Dan Barton, Jay Williamson, David Garlick, Joe Singleton (4), Karl Smith, Myles Barker (1), Sam Jackson (2), Simon Hosking (cap)(5), Dendy Hudson, Brendan Barker (10)

SECRHA Under 13's
The final Southern Counties under 13's tournament of the season took place in Farnham on Sunday with three HBU teams competing. The first match was between Farnham and the under 11 side, Kent Connections. Right from the start the youngsters had the majority of possession with lots of chances to score. They gave themselves a 5-0 half time lead through two goals for Josh Butcher, two for Tom Barton and one for Jamie McVey. The second half began the same way and Kent Connections pulled ahead further through Luca Commentucci but then Farnham began to start pressuring the United goal and were rewarded for their efforts part-way through the half. However, United sealed their win as Butcher completed his hat-trick; final score Farnham 1-7 Kent Connections.
Next HBU Everlast played HBU JK Metals, who were fielding three under 15 players and were also joined by an East Grinstead player. Everlast enjoyed control of the first half and pulled ahead after Max Osborne and Lewis Greenwood both scored two apiece. JK Metals worked more chances during the second half but were unable to make them count while Everlast piled on the goals, two more for Greenwood, one for Osborne and one for Kier Maeers to finish 8-0 winners.
Everlast then faced Farnham. The United side had almost all of the possession but their inexperieced opponents defended well and Everlast were only able to convert a few of their numerous chances. Greenwood scored a first half hat-trick while Osborne and Maeers also netted to give them a 5-0 lead. The second half was much the same although with Farnham tiring under the onslaught Everlast were able to score six: Osborne (2), Maeers (1), Greenwood (1) and Nathan Emslie (2). Final score Farnham 0-11 Everlast.
Kent Connections played JK Metals in another inter-club match and the youngsters took an early lead through Connor Botting and Barton. With end to end play there were plenty of chances for both sides to score and it was JK Metals who pulled ahead at the break after goals from David Martindale, Michael Gregory and two from Sam Saunders to take a 4-2 lead. Saunders completed his hat-trick after the restart and then JK Metals pulled further ahead after two from Alice Osborne and another for Gregory. However the under 11's were determined to get back into the game but although Barton scored twice they were defeated by the size of their opponents. Final score Kent Connections 4-8 JK Metals.
Next Kent Connections faced Everlast and, despite having just played one set of older opponents, took the game to their other older club-mates. The first half was an even affair with Everlast only managing to score twice through Greenwood and Osborne. However, they worked more pressure in the second half and added to their score through Maeers (2), Greenwood, Osborne and Emslie to finish 7-0 victors.
The final match saw Farnham play JK Metals with the United side taking control of their opponents. Four goals for Josh Emslie in the first half saw a good lead grow and this was added to by Martindale, with Farnham only scoring once in reply. The second half saw more of the same and two goals for Saunders and one each for Katie McVey and Charlie Botting saw JK Metals to a 9-1 victory.
With all tournaments now completed Everlast win the league by one point from JK Metals, Kent Connections finished third with Farnham and East Grinstead in fourth and fifth respectively.
Teams:
Kent Connections: Tom Barton, Connor Botting, Josh Butcher, Luca Commentucci, Britany Dyball, Jamie McVey, Rhys Young

Under 9's
The latest in the series of friendly ties between these two young roller hockey teams shows no signs of letting up and once again they were separated by a single goal. United took the lead within two minutes, as Joshua Osborne's long-range flick squeezed under the goalkeeper's body, but they held their lead for just a minute, after Herne Bay converted a well-worked set of passes. From then on it was end-to-end stuff. Jamie Leonard pulled off two smart saves in the United goal before Osborne scored his second with a long shot. Within a minute, Herne Bay pulled level again with a fine individual goal. United began to dominate towards the end of the half. Callum Reade Jones intercepted a free hit and broke free, but his shot was well saved. United took in a 3-2 half-time lead through Sian Emslie, who scored from close range after her first shot had been saved.
Second half, same story. Herne Bay took just three minutes to draw level, and then started to pile on the pressure. But they were unlucky to hit the post especially as the rebound was taken upfield and converted by Osborne. Minutes later, Noah Latham flicked a good chance over the bar for United. United were now under serious pressure, but defended like demons with Will Parkinson-Wellard and Archie Isaacs tough tacklers in midfield and George Daly impassable at the back. There was just time for Herne Bay to hit the post again before the game ended 4-3 to United. Watch this space for another rematch.

Premier League: Herne Bay United 25 - 1 Herne Bay and Herne Bay United 8 - 6 Manchester (Played: Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 April)
This week has been a good week for Herne Bay United for not only two wins in the League but disciplinary action against the previous league leaders, Grimsby, being docked three matches for playing a suspended player during three matches and one of those being the game United lost. United now go top. Herne Bay United played local rivals Herne Bay on Saturday with a convincing score line that was unexpected with Herne Bay's last two games in the local league against United being a lot closer and causing the champions difficulty. However with United's captain Simon Hosking being the man on form with a serious hot streak scoring eight against the Bay and this season's rookie Joel De Figueiredo with five, both had great performances. Unfortunately for the Bay, United never looked under pressure and were cruising to a 25-1 victory.
Herne Bay United then faced Manchester on the Sunday morning who had beaten HBU 2 on the previous evening with a close 6-9 loss suffering two quick goals after getting one back when they pulled the keeper and attacked with five out players. United's Sunday morning game was another good team performance with Captain Hosking continuing his run of form from the previous evening with five exceptional goals. This game was again close, United never lost the lead but gave glimpses of opportunity for Manchester to get back into the game, but held fast even when United were down to three men with two sinbinned and Manchester with five, United only conceded one and though this made life somewhat a little difficult they took six points over the weekend with an 8-6 win.
United's manager Phil McVey said: "Overall a good weekend and two good performances, this keeps us where we need to be in the hunt to keep the title and also a good message for our National Cup semi final next month!"
Herne Bay United's next premier league games are on April 24 against Project 2010 and on April 25 against Bury. HBU2 play Middlesbrough on April 25 all these matches at the Pier. Faversham's RHC Invicta will play Herne Bay United in the Cup Semi final on the May 8 at the Pier Pavillion 7:30 pm. Invicta beat Herne Bay two weeks ago 5-6 on golden goal.

Senior National Cup: Herne Bay United 12 - 1 Letchworth (Played: Saturday 27 March)
HBU faced Letchworth in the National Cup at the weekend and eased through to the Semi-Finals with a 12-1 victory. United started strong with fluid team play and United's first chance came within seconds of the start but failed to finish the chance after all the hard work was done. United continued to heap the pressure on Letchworth and this showed with two Letchworth players being sin binned with Blue cards. United failed to finish both directs given to them but finally finished five minutes in on the power play with a good team worked goal when Brendan Barker found Joel Figueiredo who finished with a delayed shot to beat the over-committed Letchworth 'keeper. It should have been the opening point for United but finishing their chances they were not and Letchworth's 'keeper was putting on a world class performance. United changed the line up looking for the solution but it failed to appear. Finally United's captain, Simon Hosking, sussed the keeper and scored nearly three identical goals inside two minutes giving United the edge they needed to settle and go about their work, scoring a further three and going into half time with a 7-1 lead.
United's strong finish to the first half looked to be continuing when Hosking found Barker on the far post to finish within three minutes of the start. However it was not the case and United again kept up the team rotations but failed to score another goal until the final three minutes when they pulled the 'keeper and went at Letchworth with an empty net but five out players. Letchworth were overwhelmed, United giving them no space. United's strength showed through with Letchworth failing to score in the empty net and United scoring four. United were satisfied with their work and Manager Phil McVey responded when asked the reason for pulling the keeper in the last minutes of the game, said: "It is
part of the new rules this season and we need to practice the scenario in case it comes down to being a situation that could decide the winner of the Cup or the League. I am pleased with how it worked, it is exciting and shows how hard it is for the opposition to find the space, and the crowd certainly seemed to like it."
HBU will now face newly formed club Faversham's RHC Invicta, date to be announced. Also over the weekend it was decided that this year's National Cup finals will take place at the Pier Pavilion, Herne Bay, expected to be the 24 July.

SECRHA Under 13's
Three HBU teams travelled to East Grinstead for a southern counties tournament on Saturday. The first game was between the under 11's, HBU Kent Connections, and a combined East Grinstead/Farnham team. Kent Connections had the majority of possession during the first half and built up a commanding lead with goals from Jamie McVey, Tom Barton (3), Connor Botting, Josh Butcher (2) and Britany Dyball (2). East Grinstead/Farnham could only get one in reply to leave Kent Connections 9-1 ahead at the break. The youngsters eased off a bit after the break allowing their opponents more chances on goal. A further goal each for McVey, Barton and Butcher and one for Luca Commentucci stretched their lead although their opponents scored two more. Final score East Grinstead/Farnham 3-13 Kent Connections.
Next HBU Everlast, fielding two under 15 players, faced HBU JK Metals. There were plenty of chances for both teams during the first half although Everlast took an early lead through Max Osborne and Kier Maeers. However JK Metals then equalised through two from Alex Mount and then pulled ahead with a goal from Luke Latham and two from George Kohler to lead 5-3 at half time. Again the second half saw plenty of chances for both teams. Everlast could only add one more from Osborne while Mount scored two more and Kohler completed his hat-trick for JK Metals to run out 8-3 winners.
Kent Connections then played Everlast and held their older opponents for most of the first half, Everlast only managing to score one from Alice Osborne. Age came into force in the second half though with Everlast able to power past their tiring younger clubmates. Two goals for Max Osborne, and one each for Alice Osborne, Maeers and Josh Emslie saw Everlast to a 0-6 victory.
JK Metals then played the combined East Grinstead/Farnham team. The first half was played at a very slow pace with neither team making the most of their chances. Kohler opened the scoring only to see it equalised. David Martindale added another and Mount got two with their opponents only getting one more in reply to leave JK Metals 4-2 ahead at half time. The pace was better in the second half with much more effort put into the game and this was rewarded with a tally of goals; Latham (6), Mount (2), Martindale (1) and Kohler (1) to which East Grinstead/Farnham had no reply. Final score East Grinstead/Farnham 2-14 JK Metals.
Kent Connections faced JK Metals in another exciting game between these two sides. Although JK Metals took the lead through Mount the youngsters then took control of the game and two goals for Barton and one for Butcher gave them to a 3-1 lead at half time. However JK Metals then used their age advantage during the second half although they were made to work for their goals. One for Mount, two for Martindale and three for Latham were enough to give JK Metals a 7-3 win.
Due to the combined teams and overage players most of the games were friendly matches. JK Metals have now moved top of the league with Everlast dropping to second. Kent Connections remain in third place.
Teams:
Kent Connections: Tom Barton, Connor Botting, Josh Butcher, Luca Commentucci, Britany Dyball, Oliver Hudson, Jamie McVey, Rhys Young
JK Metals: Charlie Botting, Jarod Dyball, George Kohler, Luke Latham, David Martindale, Alex Mount

Kent League: HBU Ultras 8 - 1 MCE Fire
HBU Ultras played Herne Bay's MCE fire at the weekend and continued in consistent form and once they overcame the first half frustrations of playing excellent hockey with some great movement but failing to find the finishing product, they went into the break with some unsettlement in the team. MCE played a tight defence and new keeper Matt, who filled the spot whilst MCE Fire's first selection recovered from sudden illness, was playing exceptionally.
HBU Ultras came out in the second half and continued to play some of their best hockey all season but were still lacking the finishing product. With twelve minutes remaining a change in the line up and strategy the Ultras turned the game around and five goals quickly followed, and a game that was missing the finishing product suddenly reappeared; this was down to Ultras change of strategy and MCE tiring. Ultras finished comfortable 8-1 victors.
Brendan Barker after the game said: "We were frustrated in the first half and tempers were boiling due to our lack of finishing, however towards the latter part of the second half the coach asked the team to implement a small change which worked to great effect and we all settled down and the game opened up as we intended."
Ultras next Kent League fixture is to be rescheduled but United are back in action on March 27 in a double header Roller Hockey night at the Pier when they play Letchworth and Faversham's RHC Invicta play Herne Bay in the first round of the National Senior Knockout Cup competition.

Premier League: Herne Bay United 9 - 5 Grimsby (Played: Saturday 6 March)
Herne Bay United looked to continue the progress they made on the league leaders Grimsby and put on a strong performance. United started with the same team that beat Middlesbrough in their previous outing, playing strong and moving the ball with purpose. Captain Simon Hosking put the champions on the right foot with an unstoppable shot within 30 seconds of the start. United continued to wait and be patient and didn't over push and commit, United's next goal didn't come for 11 minutes, but looked dangerous on the break and punished Grimsby for their errors and in the final 13 minutes of the half United scored three times through Barker with the third coming from a defence splitting pass from teammate Karl Smith. United finished the half with a comfortable 4-0 lead.
United continued with the strategy of the first half and were rewarded almost immediately and looked in complete control scoring a further three goals with three counter attacks with some excellent team goals, Joel Figueiredo assisting with one and finishing one himself.
At this point United were comfortable with a seven goal lead but their concentration lapsed and Grimsby were given a renewed confidence after a being awarded a goal from a dubious decision on a 'did it didn't it' cross the line. United conceded a further four through Allan Johnson and Andrew Simms getting a hat-trick. United however, never let the pressure off scoring twice to keep daylight in the score and finished the game 9-5 victors.
Stand in Manager Dendy Hudson, who is not playing this week due to injury said: "We were impressive and dominating throughout, making some excellent team moves and creating lots of chances. Everyone was determined and fully committed to ensure three crucial points were gained. However, the last seven minutes need to be reviewed and has given us something to tactically discuss and work on at training."
United are now second in the table with a game in hand and have every chance of remaining in control if they keep their heads.

ECRHA Under 13's
Herne Bay United's under 13's team competed in their fourth Eastern Counties tournament at the weekend. Their first game was against Ely Blue with HBU dominating the first half. A hat-trick for Alex Mount and one each for Luke Latham, Lewis Greenwood and Charlie Botting gave the team a commanding 6-0 lead at half time. However, they didn't start the second half as strongly and Ely Blue were able to have more chances than they were allowed in the first half. They were not able to score, though, and another goal each for Mount and Latham put the result beyond doubt. Final score HBU 8-0 Ely Blue.
Next they played Bury in the toughest game of the tournament. Mount opened the scoring through a penalty but Bury equalised from a direct free hit and then took the lead. After half time Bury scored two quick goals before Latham could reply for United. Bury scored again before disagreements about refereeing resulted in two players receiving blue cards and the manager a red, thus reducing United to two players. Bury scored again from the ensuing direct free hit to which United could not reply. Final score Bury 6-2 HBU.
The third game was against Norwich and this was another game where United had most of the possession. Another first half hat-trick for Mount and a goal each for Latham and Greenwood gave United a good lead with Norwich only scoring one from a direct free hit. The second half was quieter; Latham scored twice to complete his hat-trick for the game before Norwich scored the final goal from a penalty. Final score HBU 7-2 Norwich.
Finally the team played Ely Green in a game where the lead was constantly changing. Ely Green opened the scoring before Greenwood equalised straight away only to see Ely Green immediately take the lead again and then stretch it to two goals. Latham pulled one back but Ely Green regained their two goal lead before Latham scored twice to make things level at half time. United scored first in the second half through Mount but Ely Green soon equalised again. Greenwood scored and Mount then got two to give United a good lead. Ely Green then got one back immediately but Mount scored the final goal to give United a 9-6 win.

Premier League: Project 2010 7-11 HBU2 (Played: Saturday 6 March)
At the same time that HBU (1) were facing Grimsby at the pier, HBU (2) were facing the England U17's at Soham. United travelled to the match with only one sub as work and holiday commitments ruled out over half the players. Despite the weakened side the HBU veterans were determined to make it two wins out of three since their emergency call up to fulfil the premier league fixtures of HBU CSL who walked out earlier in the season.
United went 0-1 up after only 22 seconds; Phil McVey found Nigel Mills in England's penalty area whose first time finish found the back of the net. United's joy was short lived as the England U17's equalised 35 seconds later. The youngsters then proceeded to dominate the play, scoring three more unanswered goals to go 4-1 up with five minutes left in the half. United still appeared to be extremely rusty, but through sheer determination they pulled the score back to 4-4 at halftime with two goals from Paul McVey and another from Mills.
Two minutes into the second half England went 5-4 up and now believed they could go on and win the game. The Champions of yesteryear though were not going to give the game up and using all of their considerable experience levelled the game through Paul McVey with 18 minutes remaining. The momentum was now with the veteran side, they pulled ahead with three unanswered goals, two from Phil McVey and one from Nick Barton to make the score 5-8 with seven minutes remaining. The game was now effectively over, and although the England U17's did manage to score two more, United never let the three goal cushion go, and in the end ran out comfortable winners 7-11.
Following the game England manager Carlos Amaral said: "This was a good test for my players. Although HBU are slow, they play with their heads, they use their experience to keep the ball and create chances, they are not to be under estimated. My players have learnt a lot from tonight's game, this can only be good for England."
Forty-seven year old Nigel Mills said: "We are pleased with the win; this young England side shows great promise, at times they had us under real pressure and we had to use all of our experience to get the victory. It's amazing to think we had already won the Premier League 3 years in a row before any of them had even been born."
Having just received word from the pier that HBU (1) had defeated Grimsby 9-5 to go top of the premier league, United's Club Coach Phil McVey added: "I am thrilled with both results. Unfortunately I cannot be in two places at once, so I was desperate for news of the first team the moment this game finished. The Grimsby match was a must win game if HBU (1) are to secure the title again, to carry on the legacy which began with us veterans, who won the premier league for the first time all those years ago. It's just a shame for the veterans that the CSL players who walked out, didn't go earlier the season. They lost the first three games of the season before walking out. If they had gone sooner HBU might be sitting first and second in the premier league. Mind you with everyone beating everyone, it's possible we can make first and third place."

SECRHA Under 13's
Three Herne Bay United teams were in action for the third Southern Counties Under 13's tournament of the season held at the Pier on Sunday. The first game saw the under 11's team, Kent Connections, facing an East Grinstead side which included three borrowed under 15 HBU players. Kent Connections played well and held their opponents until five minutes from the break when East Grinstead took the lead. However, the under 11's were quick to equalise through Tom Barton and then added another just before the whistle from Jamie McVey. East Grinstead equalised early in the second half but the under 11's pulled ahead again through Oliver Hudson before the East Grinstead team scored two quick goals to win the game 4-3.
Next HBU JK Metals took on Farnham who were fielding a replacement goalkeeper who had never tried this position before. The strength of the JK Metals team overwhelmed their more inexperienced opponents and knocked up a huge tally. Four goals from Michael Gregory, two from George Kohler, three for Luke Latham, three for David Martindale and one for Charlie Botting gave them a 14-0 half time lead. The second half continued the onslaught on the Farnham goal; two more for Latham, three for Botting, two for Martindale and one for Gregory concluded the 22-0 whitewash.
Kent Connections then played HBU Everlast who were playing with no reserves. Their better age and experience helped Everlast to a four goal lead at half time; Max Osborne, Kier Maeers twice and Sam Whiffen were all on target. They stretched their lead through two more goals for Osborne in the middle of the second half. However Kent Connections pulled two back to make sure that their older club mates didn't have all the play, both from Barton. Final score Kent Connections 2-6 Everlast.
JK Metals then returned to the rink to play East Grinstead and had the majority of the play through both halves. A goal each for Kohler and Martindale gave them a 2-0 lead at the break with two from Gregory and one for Latham in the second completing a 5-0 win.
Next Everlast faced Farnham and also gave their rookie keeper a hard time. Dominating the play they scored 11 in the first half; Maeers (2), Whiffen (2), Osborne (4) and Natham Emslie (3), and a further nine in the second; Maeers (4), Whiffen (2) and Osborne (3), to complete their 20-0 rout.
Kent Connections then played JK Metals in the best game of the tournament. Some excellent end-to-end hockey saw McVey take the lead for Kent Connections before JK Metals imediately got two through Kohler and Gregory. JK Metals then scored an own goal to make things levels again but a goal from Connor Botting put the under 11's in front. Latham then scored twice to retake the lead. Kent Connections brought the score level gain before the break through Barton. The excitement continued into the second half with Kent Connections scoring first through Hudson only to see Latham equalise and then take the lead through two quick goals for JK Metals. Luca Commentucci levelled the score just 30 seconds later and things remained equal until two minutes to go when Latham and then Gregory opened a two goal lead for JK Metals. Kent Connections scored a last gasp goal with four seconds remaining from Barton but it wasn't quite enough and JK Metals narrowly beat their younger clubmates 8-7.
After the previous game's excitement the match between East Grinstead and Everlast was a much quieter affair. Osborne and Maeers both scored in first half to give Everlast a 2-0 lead at the break but East Grinstead scored two of their own in the second half. It seemed that the match would end as a draw but Osborne scored in the final two seconds to claim a 3-2 victory for Everlast.
The final game saw Kent Connections playing Farnham. Plenty of good team hockey saw them able to capitalise on the goalie's inexperience with all of the team netting during the match. Goals from Commentucci, McVey, Botting (2), Britany Dyball and Hudson (2) with one in reply from Farnham gave the youngsters a 7-1 lead at half time. They extended this in the second half with further goals from Dyball (2), Botting (2), McVey (2) and Barton (3) to give Farnham their final drubbing of the day, 16-1.
These results mean that Everlast, JK Metals and Kent Connections remain in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places respectively.
Teams:
Kent Connections: Tom Barton, Connor Botting, Luca Commentucci, Britany Dyball, Oliver Hudson, Jamie McVey, Rhys Young
Everlast: Nathan Emslie, Kier Maeers, Guy Osborne, Max Osborne, Sam Whiffen
JK Metals: Charlie Botting, Jarod Dyball, Michael Gregory, David Martindale, George Kohler, Luke Latham

Premier League: Herne Bay 5 - 9 HBU2 (Played: Sunday 7 February
The next morning HBU2 faced local rivals Herne Bay, this looked like it would a close game. United though, had taken a great deal of confidence from the previous nights game against Bury, and had decided to play a more aggressive defensive system, man to man marking the Bay side. After a tense opening to the game, United settled better and scored first, Paul McVey scoring from close range to make it 1-0. It didn't take long for the Bay to equalise, and after a slack pass from Phil McVey, Herne Bay's Steve Parkes tied the game at 1-1. United's passing game was still a little rusty but improving all the time, with ten minutes left in the half, Chris Espejo won the ball in defence, sprinted the length of the rink and coolly slotted the ball home to make it 2-1. Again the Bay responded immediately through Steve Parkes to tie the game (2-2). United were now beginning to dominate play and two unanswered goals from Nigel Mills made the score 4-2 to United at the break.
The second half saw United step up a level. Their team game was improving with every passing minute, gradually Herne Bay's defence was being put under more and more pressure. The chances started to come, and the United players started to enjoy themselves. Goals came from all over the team as Chris Espejo scored two more, Phil McVey (2), and Paul McVey (1). Although Herne Bay scored three more of their own United ran out comfortable 9-5 winners.
Following the game HBU's Nigel Mills said: "As a team we havent all played together in the Premier league since we played in the title winning side in the 1992/93 season, so we didn't really know what to expect. We know we used to be a good side, but we were up against the current young stars of the game in the match against Bury last night. We pushed them all the way, and to lose 4-2 is a credit to us. The average age of our team is 37, whereas Bury's average age is 22. On another day we could have won that game. We pushed on from that performance, and we were rewarded with a very satisfying win today. It's been a long time since we have experienced this amount of hockey in a weekend, especially at this level, and I feel every one of my 47 years. I won't be able to move for a week."
HBU captain Phil McVey added: "Although we are veteran's we are still a very good side, and we showed this weekend that we are an extremely tough side to beat. We are looking forward to the challenge of facing the cream of English roller hockey. Twenty years ago we were the best in the country, it's amazing to think we can still compete. One of our team (Richard Walker) hasn't put on a pair of skates on for 15 years until last week!! It's nice to pick up our first win, hopefully we can win a few more before the season it out. There's no pressure on us, we just have to fulfil the fixtures. Every team in the league has to play us at the pier, it has always been a fortress for us, so let's see if we can upset a few teams this year."
HBU team: (goals in both matches) Garrett Priestley (GK), Jason Robertson (GK), Jon Barton, Nigel Mills (3), Chris Espejo (3), Phil McVey (capt) (2), Paul McVey (3), Steve Clarke, Richard Walker, Nick Barton.

Premier League: Bury 4 - 2 HBU2 (Played: Saturday 6 February
This weekend saw HBU2 in Premier League action for the first time following the shock defection of virtually the entire HBU CSL squad and coach. It was going to be a baptism of fire for the players. The new look HBU2 were away to Bury in their first match of the weekend. HBU2 is made up of the HBU veterans and two players who refused to leave the club when the mass exodus took place. Bury had drawn 5-5 with HBUs first team earlier in the season so it was always going to be a tough game.
HBU2 played a tight defence and hoped to make their opponents over commit and then catch them on the break. The tactic worked perfectly as Bury struggled to create any chances. With 12 minutes remaining in the half United captain Phil McVey fired a rink long pass to teammate Nigel Mills, who deflected the ball past a helpless keeper to put United 0-1 up. Bury were shocked by the goal, and came at United even harder. United continued to soak up pressure and hit Bury on the break. Steve Clarke won the ball on the halfway line and beat Bury's last defender, who tripped him up. Somehow, as he was falling, he managed to get the shot off, unfortunately missing the target. The ref should have awarded a penalty and sin-binned the Bury defender. However he didnt, as he said he played the advantage. Two minutes later Clarke received a ball to the head and had to be taken to the hospital for stitches to be applied. United did not let this affect them and at half-time the score was 0-1 to United.
Bury came at United straight from the opening whistle of the second half, and were rewarded almost immediately when they scored from a tight angle to make it 1-1 with only a minute of the half gone. Four minutes later they made it 2-1. Bury now had the momentum, and the game looked to be slipping away from the United veterans. Using all their experience HBU battled on, they stunned Bury with 12 minutes left, another long pass from Phil McVey found his brother Paul who deflected the ball past the Bury keeper, a carbon copy of their first goal to tie the game at 2-2. However as the half went on United started to tire, with seven minutes left Bury went 3-2 ahead, and it looked like there was no way back for United. Then with four minutes left Phil McVey won the ball and beat the last defender, only to be scythed down. A blue card and sin-bin should have shown to the Bury player. To everyone's amazement this did not happen, a team foul was awarded instead. A penalty was awarded which Phil McVey missed. United now had to throw caution to the wind if they were going to get anything out of the game. With two minutes left Phil McVey earned a blue card and was sin-binned for a foul. Bury scored the resulting penalty to make it 4-2. Despite their best efforts United ran out losers 4-2.

Premier League: Middlesbrough 4 - 9 Herne Bay United (Played: Saturday 6 February
After United's loss last weekend they needed to come out fighting to put the title back on track. The weekend didn't start out well when United, already down to a bare team as last weekend due to players' work commitments, lost their only sub down to illness and so found themselves travelling to League leaders Middlesbrough with no substitutes. This would mean playing a very disciplined game to enable the five players to make it through the game. United opted for a box diamond defence to allow them to catch Middlesbrough on the break and conserve energy. This paid off as Neil Austin finished in the top corner after just two minutes. United continued well but Middlesbrough had a penalty shot but failed to make it count. The game continued to flow openly and an error from United released
Middlesbroughs Michael Ableson who equalized. Simon Hosking then thought he had scored and although was fouled he finished well. Initially annoyed at the disallowed goal, United were awarded with a penalty shot, Hosking made no mistake replacing the goal he felt should have been left standing. Middlesbrough kept on pushing and were awarded shortly afterwards with a good team goal finished well from Owen Stewart. The game remained tight for the majority of the half, Middlesbrough with most of the possession but failing to break United down. With six minutes remaining United took control with Brendan Barker finishing with flick up and hit from behind the goal, Middlesbrough seemed to become unhinged and lapsed with United being awarded a direct free hit after Owen Stewart was sin-bined for slashing Barker, who made no mistake in finishing his chance and in Middlesbroughs confusion Barker got his hat trick and United went into the break with a 5-2 lead.
Middlesbrough came out strong and quickly scored their third and began creating chances but with Uniteds keeper Dan Barton in fine form and the defence holding firm Middlesbrough's belief was faltering and heads were dropping. Again United worked the ball well never over committing pulling Middlesbrough out of position and eventually giving Hosking the opening he needed to neatly beat their keeper for Uniteds sixth. United seemed in control and were showing good discipline, one slight mistake and a lucky finish for Middlesbrough's fourth and keeping some pressure on United. Again, as in the first half, a controlled game with neither team over pushing or committing but as in the first half the chances again came to United as Middlesbrough's belief dropped with their frustration of being unable to break United, with Barker scoring his fourth and a much improved performance from the young Joel Figueiredo who stepped up to the challenge of the weekend and scored his first of the game, a volley against an over committed Dan Palmer. United completed the dismantling of the league leaders with a suprise push shot from Captain Hosking. United out and out winners 4-9.
Clive Bassom, United's stand-in manager for his first game hit the ground running with such an emphatic victory over the league leaders, a team that has been challenging United for the last two seasons, said: "Every player in the team did the job that was asked. Yes, mistakes were made but the job was superbly done"
Team list:
HBU: Dan Barton, Joel Figueiredo(1), Simon Hosking (capt) (3), Neil Austin (1), Brendan Barker( 4), Manager: Clive Bassom
Middlesbrough: Gary Todd, John Jones (1), Marc Rutland, Owen Stewart (1), Peter Lonsdale, Dan Palmer, Beth Cook, Michael Ableson (capt) (1), Sam Kay(1), Will Smith, Manager: Ray Stewart

Premier League: Grimsby 8 - 5 Herne Bay United (Played: Saturday 30 January)
Herne Bay United travelled to Grimsby at the weekend in the National Premier League. United are currently second in the table after dropping valuable points at Bury in their last league game with a draw and giving the advantage to the current league leaders Middlesbrough. United made the trip with a bare squad of only five out players allowing them only one possible substitute. This was due to team members work commitments being unable to make the journey. To add to the difficulties a motorway closure delayed their journey meaning a late start and having to go straight into the game. However, United started strong and scored after one and a half minutes. The game settled somewhat, United kept on the pressure but failed to score their chances. Grimsby started to get stronger scoring through Johnson and levelling the game. United soon regained the lead through Hosking scoring from a penalty and Barker scoring straight after a time out. United seemed to now have some control. Grimsby became rattled and their physical aspect of the game came out. However the referees failed to reward United for the fouls and Grimsby's tactics began to work with a string of errors from United. Grimsby scored three weak goals in the remainder of the half going into the break with a 4-3 lead over the champions.
United failed to regain any control in the start of the second half and with the referees missing numerous fouls began to destroy what should have been a good hockey game. Grimsby came out first with a goal, putting daylight between them and the champions. United as usual showed passion and though their finishing was not that of what you would expect they battled and scored a fourth and when finally rewarded with a much deserved penalty equalised 5-5. United seemed to be turning it around against all odds with a good team and the referees against them. But a foul by Hosking, who was unbelievably the first to be carded in this physical clash under the new rules aimed at making the game less physical, was only awarded the card after asking for it. Grimsby now with a power play and a direct free hit scored regaining the lead. United failed to get back into the game and against the tide with players obtaining injuries let the game go losing 8-5.
A point to be noticed is the injuries obtained that weren't self inflicted and the fact in the first half seven team fouls were made by Grimsby and three by United. How is it possible the referees awarded not one team foul to either team in a much more physical second half from a point of a spectator seems impossible and would hope the NRHA looks in to these referee's understanding of the new rules and are we playing them only some of the time as it suits? The new rules were introduced with the explanation of bringing the physical side of the game down yet in the UK it seems to have had the opposite affect. This game was closer to an Ice Hockey than a Roller Hockey one.
Now have United lost the edge they once had and the majority of the players this weekend being over 30, is this the turning point? United lost to Grimsby away last season and now again to what was once a comfortable fixture for them. United have now dropped five points this season. Can United turn it around? It is still within their grasp but every game is a final and no more slip ups can be afforded. If United can win all their remaining games with only one being away they will retain the title. The biggest game for United's season comes this weekend when they travel to Middlesbrough, the current league leaders. If United win this they will show all is still to play for and take the challenge back to the other teams in the league to come to Herne Bay and take the title from them in their home rink the Pier Pavilion. United again won't be at full strength and players carrying injuries, but will play for the win and the hope of putting this seasons campaign back on course to win their 16th premier league title.
HBU Manager Phil McVey said: "Take nothing away from Grimsby, they deserved the win. However what I witnessed today was not a game of roller hockey, it was a game of roller hockey from 20 - 30 years ago. The game was much more physical back then. If you watch a game of football from 30 years ago, that too was a much more physical game where defenders were allowed to kick lumps out of their opponents. Well that was what we saw today. Personally I would have loved to play in the match, I used to enjoy that type of hockey, however that is not what roller hockey should be now. The game has moved on, and cynical physical defending should be a thing of the past. The World body is trying to eliminate that behaviour from the game. Unfortunately some of the referees have no idea what the new rules are, and they don't know how to implement them. They are destroying the sport we love.
"I don't want it to sound like sour grapes, because HBU should win no matter how bad the refs are. I would be making these exact comments if we had won the game. When the new rules were introduced at the start of the season I told all who would listen that the directives the English Association sent out to all the referees was wrong, and that there would be no consistency from the refs, and the result will be players will have less respect for both the game, and the referees. At the moment we are involved in two premier leagues, one where the game is reffed correctly and any cynical physical defending results is punished, and one where it is condoned and rewarded. HBU have not given up on the title, it is still in our hands, if we win all of remaining games we will win the league. That is our plan."

National Cup Qualifiers

Herne Bay United Under 13's faced Cottenham in the semi-finals of the National Cup. Although Cottenham started strongly United slowly took control of the game. Cottenham were finding it hard to break through United's defence, and HBU's Alex Mount was in fine form scoring all of HBU's five first half goals. At the break it was 5-2 to United.
The second half was a similar story to the first, Cottenham threatened United's goal but could not regulary find a way past keeper Jarod Dyball in United's goal. United on the other hand looked dangerous in every attack. Alex Mount scored three more to take his tally to eight for the match, whilst team-mate Max Osbourne scored twice (both volleys) to make the final score 10-4.
HBU will now face Bury in the Cup Finals in July.

Herne Bay United Under 15's played Ely in the quarter-finals. United were the favourites going into the match, however they started slowly, and it was Ely who scored first to go 0-1 up. They did not stay in front for long as Alex Mount soon levelled the score. Ely pushed again and they were rewarded with a goal. Mount again pulled one back to tie the game at 2-2. United were now finding their feet, and as they settled down and started passing, the chances started to come. Ashley Barton scored two unanswered goals to make it HBU 4-2 Ely at halftime.
Ely came out firing in the second half, and within five minutes had levelled the game at 4-4. Ely then went 5-4 ahead and United were in trouble. Then with seven minutes remaining Alex Mount scored to tie the game at 5-5, he scored again a minute later to put United 6-5 in front. Ely though refused to give in, and with three minutes left they equalised (6-6). The game could now go either way, both teams had chances, and with only a minute left on the clock Ashley Barton scored with a well taken shot to make it 7-6. Ely had no time to come back, and United squeezed through into the semi's which were to take place two hours later.
HBU faced arch rivals Bury in the Semi final. After the poor performance in the previous match United coach Phil McVey had given the players strict instructions on how to defend against Bury. This was a huge change in defensive tactics from the previous game. United were going into this game as under dogs, Bury were the favourites for the competition, their captain being one of the best in the country in this age group. McVey had decided to put two players on him all the time to stop him playing. The two players assigned this role were Alex Mount and Lewis Greenwood, both would need to put in disciplined performances if the tactic was to work.
Following their poor performance in the previous match the United players were determined to show McVey what they could do, and with Mount and Greenwood doing an excellent job marking the Bury captain, Ashley Barton and Katie McVey were dealing with the three remaining Bury players excellently, Bury were becoming frustrated. It wasn't long before United capitalised with Ashley Barton scoring to make it 1-0. Bury though, are a good side and they levelled to make it 1-1, United's tactic was working, and with Mount and Greenwood working as a pair they robbed the ball from the Bury player and attacked, Greenwood passing to Mount who scored to make it 2-1. Again Bury came back at United and the score at half-time was 2-2. United coach Phil McVey then brought on Max Osbourne for Greenwood and Alice Osborne-Luck for Katie McVey. The changes worked perfectly as the fresh legs paid off, Bury could not live with the constant pressure put on them by the United defence, on two occasions in quick succession Osbourne released Mount who finished expertly to make it 4-2. Then with Osbourne tiring, he was changed for Luke Latham to continue to press and harry the opposition. Latham was magnificent against the tiring opponents scoring twice in quick succession to make it 6-2 with five minutes remaining. Josh Emslie was then brought on for Osborne-Luck to keep it tight at the back. With no more goals in the game, United had run out comfortable 6-2 winners.
At the end of a long day HBU coach Phil McVey said: "I was pleased with the U13's performance in their semi. Although they did not set the world alight, a professional workman-like performance was enough to see them through. We now have plenty of time to improve before the final. What was most pleasing was the U15 side. I was very disappointed with their quarterfinal performance against Ely, and we were lucky to make it through to the semi. I had a long talk with the players, I changed the tactics, it was a risky move, for the tactics to work every single player had to carryout their instructions to the letter. To their credit they did. The entire team gave everything they had. They played with discipline, energy and style. In my opinion it was the most complete performance by any team at any level that I have seen for sometime. They proved they can do it, I now expect them to do it every time they play. We have another tough challenge as we will face Peterborough in the final."
Finals are to take place on Saturday 17 July.

Under 9's
Last weekend Herne Bay United played a friendly against local rivals Herne Bay. The players from both teams were very excited, for many of them this was their first competitive match. In front of a crowd of over a 100 the players did not disappoint, the match was exciting from beginning to end. It was United who took an early lead going two goals up through Josh Osbourne. However Herne Bay recovered well and pulled one back just before halftime to make it 2-1 at the break. The second half was equally close, as both teams tired, gaps appeared in both defences. The two keepers had to be at their best as both sides created numerous chances. Herne Bay were the first to score making it 2-2, United then went ahead again through Noah Latham, scoring his first ever goal, however Herne Bay hit back immediately to level the game at 3-3. The game looked to be heading to a draw, but with two minutes left Noah Latham scored again to make the final score 4-3 to United.
HBU President Ron Barker said: "Everyone enjoyed the game, the fans, players and coaches. It's great to see the kids all enjoying themselves. They are the future of the game. We need to do all we can to nuture and encourage all of them. Both teams played some good stuff. The future for both clubs is bright."

SECRHA Under 13's
The second Southern Counties under 13's tournament took place on Sunday at the Pier. The first game was between HBU JK Metals, an under 13's team and HBU Kent Connections, an under 11's team. To begin JK Metals had more opportunities although only Luke Latham was able to get past the Kent Connections' defence. As the half progressed the younger team pressured their opponents more and more, and their hard work was rewarded by a Tom Barton goal to leave the teams equal at half time. The second half saw JK Metals make the most of the age advantage with two more Latham goals and another from Michael Gregory giving them a 4-1 victory.
Next HBU's other under 13 team, Everlast, played East Grinstead. Good teamwork saw them outplay their more inexperienced opponents and three goals for Kier Maeers, two for Sam Whiffen and one each for Max Osborne and Lewis Greenwood gave them a commanding 7-0 lead at half time. However, their opponents were determined to give them a good game and the second half was not so one-way, although Everlast stretched their lead through another two for Maeers and one more for Whiffen to which East Grinstead were unable to reply. Final score 10-0.
JK Metals then played Farnham who took the lead after a few minutes. Neither team was then able to break through the other's defence until three goals in the final minute, two for Latham and one for Alex Mount, saw JK Metals take a 3-1 lead to the break. The second half saw JK Metals in command of the game with a hat-trick for David Martindale and one each for George Kohler, Latham and Gregory giving the HBU side a 9-1 win.
Next Kent Connections faced Everlast. Despite good work from the younger side Everlast seemed to be taking control after goals for Greenwood, Whiffen and two for Osborne, but Kent Connections got back into the game when Barton scored two. However, the second half saw Everlast power past their younger clubmates; two goals each from Greenwood, Maeers and Osborne giving them a 10-2 win.
The next game was JK Metals against East Grinstead with the HBU side in control for the first half. Two goals each for Mount, Gregory and Latham and one for Kohler were only replied to once. However, the second half was much more even; two goals for Mount, one for Latham and one for Martindale, were matched by three for East Grinstead. The first half tally proved too much to overcome though and JK Metals won 11-4.
Kent Connections' final game was against Farnham in an entertaining and hard fought match. Farnham scored just a minute into the game but Kent Connections equalised imediately through Britany Dyball. In a half offering lots of chances to both teams only Farnham were able to score again to take one goal lead to the break. Again Farnham grabbed a goal straight from the start of the game and once more Kent Connections replied imediately, this time through Jamie McVey. Farnham scored again to give them a two goal lead but sheer determination and excellent teamwork resulted in another goal from McVey as well as one each for Josh Butcher and Luca Commentucci for Kent Connections to get a well deserved 5-4 win.
JK Metals and Everlast then faced each other for their final game. This game had been a 10-1 victory to Everlast when the teams met at the previous tournament but JK Metals worked hard on their passing in this game with the desired results. Two goals each from Mount, Latham and Gregory with no reply saw them 6-0 up at half time. Everlast upped their game for the second half and Greenwood scored a hat-trick but with another JK Metals goal from Latham they had done enough to win 7-3.
League placings remain unchanged from the last tournament; 1st - Everlast, 2nd - JK Metals, 3rd - Kent Connections, 4th -Farnham, 5th - East Grinstead
Teams:
JK Metals: Charlie Botting, Jarod Dyball, Michael Gregory, George Kohler, Luke Latham, David Martindale, Alex Mount
Everlast: Charlie Burgess, Nathan Emslie, Lewis Greenwood, Kier Maeers, Guy Osborne, Max Osborne, Sam Whiffen

Kent League: HBU Ultras 14 - 0 East Grinstead (Played: Saturday 23 January)
HBU Ultras played their second game of the Kent League campaign on Saturday evening. East Grinstead fielded a bare side due to player availability. The Ultras were made up of six of HBU's Premier League side, the current National Champions, so East Grinstead had a hard task for their first game of the League. HBU were strong from the offset and had a 6-0 lead at half time, and never looked uncomfortable. They continued their dominance with East Grinstead only really having one clear chance with a penalty they failed to convert. East Grinstead showed the tiredness of a team without subs and HBU continued to push with a final score of 14-0.
HBU Ultras manger Carlos Ismael said: "I think we played at a very high tempo throughout the whole match. Ok, the opposition was not strong but I am very happy with the team's commitment who lead to high tempo. We created many goal opportunities and we scored only 14. In my opinion a low turnover for the opportunities created. We have to give some merit to the other team, but on occasions we should have scored. Nobody is abated from that fact. All in all, an excellent performance. Needs to be seen the results versus stronger opposition, e.g, the other HBU team and Herne Bay."
HBU Team: David Garlick (gk), Jay Williamson(gk), Neil Austin (cpt)(6), Joel Figueiredo (1), Joe Singleton (2), Myles Barker, Brendan Barker (5)

CERS Cup: Herne Bay United 1 - 4 AFP Giovinazzo
Reigning National Champions Herne Bay United played the home leg of their CERS Cup game against Italian side Giovinazzo at the Pier on Saturday night. The referee was from Portugal. The large crowd in attendance were not disappointed as HBU put on a real fight against their Italian rivals. The game was an extremely hard fought encounter. HBU started well and took the game to Giovinazzo. Neither could break down their opponents defence. However with 14 minutes remaining in the half the Italian's no.6 scored with a well taken finish to make it 0-1. HBU fought back, but despite Barker, Hosking, Hudson and Jackson all having clear chances to score the Italians held firm and at half time the score was 0-1.
The second half was as hard fought as the first. United's Joel Defiguerado picked up a blue card within the first 13 seconds of the half. This meant a Direct Free Hit was awarded to the visitors and United were reduced to three men for two minutes. United keeper (David Garlick) saved the Direct Free Hit and United's three out players defended heroically to keep the Italians out until the time penalty was served and they could get another player on. The game then settled back down with both teams looking very evenly matched. Then with 18 minutes remaining Barker picked up a blue card and a two minute sinbin. Again Garlick saved the Direct Free Hit and the United players managed to see out the power play without conceding. In fact, although a man down, United created four or five clear cut chances during the power play, and could have easily levelled but for some fine saves from the Italian Keeper. Giovinazzo doubled their lead with 16 minutes remaining when their no.7 scored from close range. They went further ahead when their no.4 scored to make it 0-3 with ten minutes remaining. United re-doubled their efforts in attack, with Hosking, Barker and Singleton all coming close. Then with six minutes left the home side's attacking endeavours paid off when Simon Hosking beat the Italian defender before rounding the keeper and slotting the ball home to make it 1-3. United now had the bit between their teeth and were pressing Giovinazzo all over the rink. Then with five minutes to go United striker Sam Jackson unleashed a powerful shot which took a wicked deflection hitting his teammate Neil Austin in the forehead. The game was then stopped for ten minutes as Austin's head was split open by the ball; Austin received medical attention and the blood was cleaned up. When the game resumed United pressed for another goal, leaving gaps at the back. With one minute remaining it was Hosking's turn to pick up a blue card and a sin bin penalty after a firm challenge. Again Garlick saved the resulting Direct Free Hit. However United could not keep the Italians out and with less than a second left on the clock and virtually on the final whistle the Italian no.6 scored to make the final score 1-4.
After the game United Captain Simon Hosking said: "We are disappointed not to get the win tonight, we fought them all the way. On another night we might have scored five or six ourselves. We hope the fans enjoyed it. Tonight was all about the fans."
United Coach Phil McVey added: "It was an extremely close match which could have gone either way. I am delighted with the performance of the side. We held the ball well, our team game was the best it has been for a couple of years, and we showed the professionals that we can play a bit. The lads were desperate to put on a good showing for the fans. On behalf of all the players I would like to thank all our loyal supporters and all the people who work behind the scene to make these nights happen. I would also like to wish our opponents the very best for their next matches in the CERS CUP."

Kent League: HBU Ultras 6 - 1 Wilbee
The Kent County Roller Hockey Association (KCRHA) got the 2009/2010 season underway on Saturday night with a senior and a junior match at the Pier Pavilion. This was the first time the league has played with the full new rules of the game. The senior match was between HBU Ultras and Wilbees fielded by the Herne Bay club. With the recent defection of 17 players from HBU to the Invicta club which plays out of Faversham, HBU fielded what was pretty much a Premier League side. Wilbees were a team of similar standard players but now veterans supplemented by Portuguese import Tiago de Sousa.
HBU expected to rattle up a large score but somehow Wilbees managed to keep up their energy backed by exceptional goal-keeping from Paul Dalton. The final score was 6-1 to the Ultras with Wilbee's goal slotted home by John Chalk from a breakaway after the Ultras got caught with too many players up the floor.
The match marked a return by Carlos Ismael managing the Ultras team which includes his son Joel. Carlos was responsible for much of the development of the players in the HBU first team and after the match he commented: "We need to go back to some of the basics as we failed far too many attacks, but I have not enjoyed a hockey match so much in a long time".
HBU Ultras Team: Brendan Barker (1), Neil Austin (2), Joe Singleton (2), Joel de Figueiredo (1) Karl Smith, Myles Barker, Jamie Williamson (GK)

SECRHA Under 17's
The three match programme on Sunday morning included teams from HBU, East Grinstead and guests Cottenham from near Cambridge. Although the competition was "under 17" HBU fielded an under 15 team because of the loss of players from this age-group to Invicta. HBU has an extensive under 13 squad but many of the under 13 players away at a tournament in Eastern Counties leaving a bare team facing a mountain to climb in both experience and age. As it happened, Cottenham had players out through illness which set the scene for the matches to be more even than otherwise might have been the case.
The results were: East Grinstead 4-0 HBU, East Grinstead 6-4 Cottenham, Cottenham 9-1 HBU.
In the first match HBU showed their promise and were capable of as many attacks as the opposition but unable to beat the East Grinstead goalkeeper. The performance in the match against Cottenham was even better but Cottenham had regained some form and HBU had very tired legs having played the first match with no reserves to call upon. HBU's goal came from Max Osborne and his brother, Guy Osborne put in a formidable performance in goal for HBU.

HBU News
This week the Coach of CSL, the Club's senior B team, Ken Pughe resigned. Ken informed the Club that he and the CSL players were joining up with a new hockey club called RHC Invicta with another coach Dave White, who recently resigned from the Herne Bay Club.
These departures do not affect our first team who are National Champions, or our junior players and families. If you have any concerns or questions please do not hesitate to speak to myself, Phil our Principal Coach or any of the coaches, Trish Osborne, Mark Botting, Paul Mount, Paul McVey.
Herne Bay United is one of the most successful clubs in the country and is respected at home and abroad. We will continue to work hard to develop and nurture our players and together make this a great season. We potentially have openings for more coaches and officials and would welcome offers of help from any member. As a junior section we are looking forward to 2010 and hosting an under 14 tournament at the Pier on February 13 and 14 when we will be welcoming a team from St Omer in France as well as other UK clubs. We will be taking HBU on the road to visit St Omer for friendly games and training on April 10 and 11.

Premier League: Bury 5 - 5 Herne Bay United (Played: Saturday 5 December)
Herne Bay United travelled to Bury for their forth League game of the season. United were travelling confident with a strong side and good
results so far in the League expected to have the edge. United were coming off the back of playing the Italian side Giovinazzo, and success
at The Canterbury and District Awards 2009 with the club winning Club of 2009, Phil McVey winning Coach 2009 and Brendan Barker getting Senior
Sports Performer 2009.
United looked strong at the start, the first five being David Garlick, Neil Austin, Brendan Barker, Joe Singleton and Joel Figueiredo linking up well and playing the ball around comfortably. United's first goal came through a direct free hit after a hook by Ricky Jupp on Barker, who made no mistake finishing from the spot. United continued to dominate with very few chances being created by Bury, United were failing and the usual difficulties encountered at Bury's home rink were showing. Dave Garlick made some excellent saves stopping from the spot whilst Bury were on the power play after Karl Smith was sin-binned for two minutes. Bury capitalized on the extra player and Jupp finished after a weak pass from United whilst under pressure. Bury's renewed confidence lead to a second goal but United showed their
strength creating chance after chance, the pressure causing Jupp to crack and he received his second blue of the match. Barker converting the
chance given to him for a second time and then went to half time level.
After the break Bury came out the strongest; Smith receiving his second blue and Bury converting, and then taking another and a strong lead of 4-2. The pressure was now on for the boys from Herne Bay and with some battling, Barker getting his third of the game from the spot and his fourth in open play after numerous team efforts. United looked as
champions and were coming at Bury determined not to be beaten but after a failed pass Bury took a shock lead with only one minute thirty nine seconds left of play. United's Austin stepped up and equalised to rescue a point with just fifteen seconds left. United again had a final opportunity and were so close to nipping the victory but was not to be.
United's manager Phil McVey was disappointed with the teams
performance with a game that should have just been a formality and said: "Though our performance was not at it's best, referee decisions today played a major part and a game changing decision when Simon Hosking was hooked by Bury's keeper Matt Conroy. The referee failed to follow the rule guidance, and was explained by the referee at half time accidental or not a hook will be punished by a blue card and sin binned. This was not done and could have had a major affect on the game. However with fifteen seconds left of play we have taken a point and our title race should not be affected though we have given our rivals unnecessary belief".

CERS Cup: AFP Giovinazzo 10 - 0 Herne Bay United (Played: Saturday 21 November)
The weekend of the 20/21 November was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Herne Bay United, with the Senior team travelling to Giovinazzo Italy, for the away leg of the European Cup, and the Club having been nominated for three possible awards at the Canterbury and District Sports Awards 2009. The news on Friday drifted in that HBU had had a successful evening at the awards with Herne Bay United winning the award for Club 2009, Philip McVey winning Coach of the year 2009 and Brendan Barker winning Senior Sports Performer 2009. It was hoped that this success could be translated into the coming game against the Italians.
Unfortunately it was not to be. United were caught slow out of the blocks conceding three quick goals, the first from a defensive error resulting in some great skill from a young Giovinazzo player (number 6, one to watch), the second from a power play after a foul committed by Neil Austin who was sent to sin bin for two minutes and the third from a penalty.
United were being punished by the new rules which were being played somewhat stricter than they were being implemented back in the UK and what they were used to.
United regrouped and after the initial three goals and some changes to the defensive strategy began to hold off the Italians. United were having chances; one close range effort that should have been a goal and number of chances from team plays, but United were failing to convert. From an outside perspective United seemed to struggle with the rink surface and lacked grip. This is an unfortunate part of amateur sport where players have wheels they hope will perform on the majority of surfaces to save cost, where the professional counterparts have a selection of possible options and can change wheels depending on the surface - a luxury United cannot afford. United showed strength and a stronger second half performance showed promise for the coming home leg.
The atmosphere in Italy was truly what matches of old were like with nearly a full house with drums and ticker tape, the people were very respectful of the English and the hospitality shown was second to none and they truly were tremendous hosts. Giovinazzo are a team for the future and managed by what many players of old would have considered the greatest player of his time, Marzella.
Manager Phil McVey was not too down hearted and was looking forward to the home leg saying: "Yes a big defeat, however I feel a fair result on our performance. Taking away the early goals the game would have been different and 6-2 or 3 would've been easier to swallow. We now must look forward to the home leg of which I have no doubt will be a different affair, a match to remember we hope for the supporters. The Italians will have to adapt to our rink which will be as it was for us in Italy not so easy, also we will not be caught napping at the start for a second time.
Team: Dan Barton, Jamie Williamson (GKs), Neil Austin, Brendan Barker, Joel de Figueiredo, Simon Hosking, Sam Jackson, Joe Singleton, Karl Smith, Nigel Mills.

Farnham Shield

Sunday 15 November saw twelve Herne Bay United under 13 players in two teams travel up to Farnham to represent the club in the 2009 Farnham Shield. In addition to our two teams, HBU 1 and HBU2, there were teams from Bury, Cottenham and Farnham. Unfortunately the late arrangement of this fixture meant that both regular goalkeepers were unavailable and so Max Osborne and David Martindale, neither of whom had ever kept goal before, volunteered to put on the number 10 shirt.
HBU 2's first game was against a strong Cottenham side, but they weren't overawed and made a bright start with Kier Maeers prompting the Cottenham keeper to make a smart save early on. Cottenham started to press, and scored twice in quick succession and then added a third after a spell of nice HBU interplay which they unfortunately couldn't convert. HBU 2 responded with a Luke Latham goal, receiving the ball from a Keir Maeers cross and lifting it over the diving Cottenham keeper. Latham scored again soon after with a really powerful slap shot from out wide and suddenly HBU 2 were back in the game. Right on halftime however, Cottenham scored their fourth and then a fifth straight after halftime which took the game away from United. Cottenham scored on four other occasions to make the final score 9-2.
HBU 2's second game saw them taking on HBU 1 and this turned out to be a really exciting game. Luke Latham opened the scoring with a typical charge at the opposition ending up one on one with their keeper who he beat comfortably. An equalizer from Alex Mount, a powerful shot from Katie McVey and a well taken goal by Sam Whiffin swooping on a loose pass appeared to suggest HBU 2 could be in for a drubbing, but this team showed all day that they were not going to give an inch, and Latham again responded and after linking well with the energetic George Kohler, beat the keeper at the far post with a long range effort. Alice Osborne scored almost immediately after a long run and shot, just before half time Latham hit the back of the net from a indirect free hit which unfortunately did not count as although passing through a group of players and the goal keeper never touched any of them! The score at halftime as in the previous game was 4-2, however HBU 2 started the second half much the stronger and three quick goals from a marauding Latham, one of them a penalty, saw the second string take the lead. HBU 1 responded immediately and were awarded a penalty which Alex Mount converted and followed up after the restart with a well taken rebound having hit the post with his initial shot. Having got their noses back in front HBU 1 took the game beyond reach with some strong skating and a superior passing game, which saw Katie McVey and Alex Mount add a further three goals each to their tallies. A late consolation goal from Luke Latham who latched onto a pin point diagonal ball from Kier Maeers made the final score 13-6 to HBU 1. It was a game you could tell all the players enjoyed immensely and they came off the rink to the loudest applause of the day.
Game 3 for HBU 2 saw them up against the form horses and eventual winners of the Shield Bury, who were also able to field second claim players from Peterborough Club. This was a tough test and although beaten 10-1, (Kier Maeers scoring with a neat flick over the keeper on the final whistle) HBU 2 made Bury work very hard. Special mention should be made here of the effort put in by Joshua Butcher in this match who got amongst the Bury players for the entire game. He chased every ball and never ducked a challenge, despite at 10 years of age being only half the size of one or two of the Bury players. He drew a lot of admiring comments from the Bury coach after the game, and should be very proud of his contribution. Another player who should be proud of his contribution is David Martindale, who playing in goal for the first time pulled off some great saves in this game, in particular a magnificent double save from a penalty early in the first half.
HBU 2's final game was the last of the day, against the host side Farnham. HBU 2 ran out comfortable 14-0 winners in this game which saw Luke Latham add a further 9 goals to his haul for the day. Also on the score sheet were Josh Butcher (2) and one a piece for Kier Maeers, George Kohler and Nathan Emslie.
At the end of a day enjoyed by all the players and their Mums and Dads who made the trip, the final positions were: 1st Bury, 2nd HBU 1, 3rd Cottenham, 4th HBU 2, 5th Farnham

SECRHA Under 13's
The first Southern Counties Under 13's tournament of the season was held on Sunday at the Pier. Herne Bay United have two under 13's teams competing; Everlast and JK Metals, as well as an under 11's teams, Kent Connections. The first match was between Everlast and JK Metals, with the former quickly taking control of the game. A first half hat-trick for Max Osborne, two for Kier Maeers and one for Sam Whiffen gave them a commanding 6-0 lead at the break. JK Metals were able to pressure more in the second half and Luke Latham scored to give them hope but two more for Maeers as well as one each for Osborne and Whiffen put the result beyond doubt. Final score Everlast 10-1 JK Metals.
The second game saw Kent Connections facing the relatively inexperienced team of East Grinstead. Some excellent team work allowed Jamie McVey to open the scoring soon followed by two from Josh Butcher. Although East Grinstead then got a goal of their own, Kent Connections continued to pressure their opponents and with Connor Botting, Oliver Hudson, Butcher and Tom Barton all netting before half time, the under 11's had a 7-1 lead at the break. The goal scoring was not so prolific in the second half but Botting claimed his hat-trick with no reply from East Grinstead making Kent Connections the 9-1 winners.
Everlast were then back in action against another inexperienced team, Farnham. Everlast scored continually throughout the first half; a hat-trick for Whiffen, four for Maeers and five for Osborne, to which Farnham could find no reply giving a half time lead of 12-0. Everlast played most of the second half with three outfield players to offer a fairer game and although Farnham did score one consolation goal a hat-trick for Nathan Emslie, two for Whiffen and one each for Osborne and Maeers gave a 19-1 victory.
Next it was another derby game, this time with JK Metals facing Kent Connections. The older JK Metals team took advantage of their younger club-mates in the first half, with Latham scoring four and Michael Gregory two. However, Kent Connections pressured throughout the second half through some excellent passing and, although Latham scored again, Botting and Barton were able to net for the under 11's to give them a very credible score of JK Metals 7 - 2 Kent Connections.
After a break for Farnham and East Grinstead to play each other, the final derby of the day took place between Everlast and Kent Connections. Everlast had proved to be the stronger of the under 13 sides during the tournament but the younger Kent Connections team really made them work for their goals during this match. Their good teamwork restricted their opponents to three goals in the first half; two for Osborne, one for Maeers. Everlast were able to make the most of their age over their tiring opponents in the second half although they were only able to add five; two each for Whiffen and Osborne, one for Maeers. Everlast won 8-0, their smallest triumph of the day.
JK Metals then played Farnham. The inexperience of the visitors showed although they put their strongest performance of the tournament. David Martindale opened the scoring with his hat-trick and, although Farnham had got one back, Charlie Botting added two more before half time. The second half was more even with two goals for Martindale and two for Farnham, giving JK Metals a 7-3 win.
The final game of the day was between Everlast and East Grinstead. Again there was a flurry of goals evenly spread over the two halves. Whiffen scored five, Osborne four and Maeers six with East Grinstead only getting one in reply to leave Everlast the 15-1 winners. This tournament's results put Everlast in 1st, JK Metals 2nd, Kent Connections 3rd, Farnham 4th and East Grinstead 5th. The next tournament takes place on 31 January.
Teams:
Everlast: Nathan Emslie, Kier Maeers, Guy Osborne, Max Osborne, Sam Whiffen
JK Metals: Charlie Botting, Charlie Burgess, Michael Gregory, George Kohler, Luke Latham, David Martindale
Kent Connections: Tom Barton, Connor Botting, Josh Butcher, Luca Commentucci, Oliver Hudson, Jamie McVey, Rhys Young

Half Term Hockey Camp

During the October half term break Herne Bay United Roller Hockey and Skating Club worked with Canterbury City Council to run a fun roller hockey day 10-3 pm at Kings Junior School in Sturry. The day was a huge success, bookings were taken in advance and spaces were filled several days before the event. There were 26 local children, aged between 8 and 14, with a varied range of skating abilities participating. The objective of the day was to provide a taste of the sport to beginners and further develop those children who already enjoy the sport. Coaching was provided by Herne Bay United's senior team player Brendan Barker and Herne Bay United and National Coach Patricia Osborne, who kept the children active and challenged throughout the day.
A fun day was had by all, and it is hoped to repeat the camp in future school holidays. Herne Bay United would like to thank Canterbury City Council Sports Development Team and Kings Junior School for their support in staging the first event of this kind.

Premier League: Manchester 5 - 11 Herne Bay United (Played: Sunday 1 November)
United travelled one short after one player went AWOL, Joel De Figueiredo. Manchester is never an easy fixture to play and results are historically ground out for United. The rink is very different than United's home rink and always proves difficult and this fixture was to be no different with water coming through the ceiling providing a further obstacle to the adjustment to the small size of the rink. United began well but struggled to beat Manchester's keeper Darren Whiteley and after a number of wild shots and chances going array it was United's veteran Nigel Mills, who has recently returned from retirement to score United's first of the game. Over the course of the first half United were in complete control and went 0-4 up with two goals from Brendan Barker and one from Neil Austin. However unforced errors were beginning to show and the result of playing the previous evening and travelling such a distance with a man down was beginning to show. Manchester capitalized on two of these errors scoring twice in quick succession through Crowther and Jean Delprat. United regained some composure with a well finished slap shot from captain Simon Hosking and a cool finish from Austin to give him his second of the game and finishing the half 2-6.
United came out of the blocks slow with Manchester taking the early initiative and the usual toing and froing game that takes place at Manchester looked to have begun with two further goals from Manchester's Delprat, bringing Manchester within reach of United. United's captain stepped up for the second time to put some daylight between the two teams with Barker shortly adding to Hosking's bringing United 4-8 in front, but again the thorn in United's side Delprat released another surprise shot and notching his fourth of the game. United now had to move up a gear to kill the game and showed why they are champions bringing the final score to 5-11 with Austin getting his hat-trick and Barker netting twice in 17 seconds and eventually winning by a convincing score line. Herne Bay United now go top of the Premier League and will spend the next few weeks preparing for their European Cup game away to Italy Giovinazzio on the 21 November where they aim to create a European upset.
HBU Manager Phil McVey said: "This was a really tough weekend for the team - a late finish Saturday night and a 5.30am start in the morning, plus a 600 mile drive round trip was always going to be a problem. We have played better, and there's plenty of room for improvement, but I can't complain. I have to say that our keeper Dave Garlick was exceptional both games. HBU gave two professional performances so I'm happy. We now need to refocus as our next match is in the European Cup against Italian side Giovinazzio; we are hoping to pull of an upset."
Teams:

Premier League: Herne Bay 0 - 8 Herne Bay United (Played: Saturday 31 October)
Reigning champions Herne Bay United faced two tough games at the weekend; the first game was against local rivals Herne Bay on Saturday evening, the second against title hopefuls Manchester on Sunday lunchtime in Manchester. Herne Bay were the first opponents, under the tutelage of manager Helio Dos Santos, and with a new player from Portugal they were always going to be difficult side to beat. However United settled down into the game well, moving the ball around and probing for openings. With 16 minutes left in the first half captain Simon Hosking finished a well worked move to put United 0-1 in front. In the next three minutes Hosking punished twice more to make it 0-3 with 12 minutes remaining in the half. However the 'Bay' regrouped and were awarded a Direct Free Hit after United's Neil Austin was sin binned for two minutes following a challenge on Dave Todd. Todd took the resulting free hit but United Keeper Dave Garlick pulled off a fine save. United managed to keep the Bay from scoring in the two minute powerplay. The Bay were now getting into the game, and were creating a few chances of their own. With five minutes remaining in the half, they were awarded a penalty. This time Danny Butcher stepped up, but again Garlick made a fine save to deny the Bay a goal. Spurred on my the penalty save United stepped up the pace and in the final four minutes Brendan Barker scored twice to make the half time score 0-5.
The second half saw the Bay change their defensive tactics (from a zonal defence to man-to-man). The change in tactics worked and they managed to keep out the champions for 15 minutes. Direct Free Hits were awarded to both teams during this period, as both sides reached 10 team fouls during the match, but neither team could find the back of the net. United though were slowly building pressure and creating chances, the Bay could not hold them off and with 11 minutes left in the match Barker made it 0-6. He scored again three minutes later to make it 0-7, and veteran Paul McVey made it 0-8 with a clinical finish from the penalty spot with five minutes remaining in the match. The Bay now were just looking for a consolation goal, and despite United again going down to three players after Barker was sin-binned for a tackle on Tiago Sousa, the Bay could not find a way through United's defence and the game ended 0-8 in HBU's favour.
Following the game Herne Bay captain Peter Halvorson said: "Last season they thrashed us, so tonight was a huge improvement, we are getting better every game, we are looking to finish in the top three this year."
Teams:
HBU: Jamie Williamson, Paul McVey(1), Nigel Mills, Myles Barker, Joel De Figueiredo, Simon Hosking(Capt)(3), Neil Austin, Joe Singleton, Brendan Barker(4), Dave Garlick, Manager Phil McVey

Premier League: Manchester 16 - 8 HBU CSL (Played: Saturday 10 October)
What it is about CSL and Manchester? Last years trip to the Arcadia was eventful, and again this year the trip started off ominously, with a phone call from the Mini Bus Hire Company, at 8.30 Saturday morning, informing us that the mini bus we had booked had broken down, in their yard. Fortunately this was better than last year, when it broke down on the motorway at 2 o'clock on the Sunday morning. We then rushed to Plan B, with two cars travelling, but unfortunately only able to accommodate eight players, seven out players and one goal keeper. One of our goal keepers had to be dropped. However we arrived at the Arcadia in time and in good spirits.
The game commenced at a good pace with CSL moving the ball and passing well, with Manchester attempting to press us back into our half. We counter attacked, Charlie Pughe opening the scoring after four minutes. However twenty seconds later Manchester levelled, there followed a further goal for CSL by Joe Fidock and another from Manchester. The first half carried on in this theme, with further goals from Myles Tichband, Joe King and Tom Hawkins. With the half time score Manchester 76 HBU CSL, the team felt quite confident that they would be able to maintain the pressure and felt that the game was winnable.
The second half started in the same fashion, but two minutes into the half and due to confusion in defence, the ball was taken from our defenders and put in the back of the net. However CSL responded with an individual goal scored from a trade mark slap shot by Joe Fidock. Manchester responded positively and started to tighten up their defence, pushing CSL harder, with CSL's apprentice goal keeper, Joel Carnell, beginning to tire, Manchester went on to score five goals in the last five minutes with only one in response from CSL. The final score was Manchester 16-8 HBU CSL. This was due in the main to poor defending from our tiring players and goal keeper alike. However it was an enjoyable game despite the result and the team came away in good spirits, knowing that we have plenty to work on. The Team Fouls recorded were 13 to CSL and 8 to Manchester, however the game was played with a good sporting attitude.
Team: Joe Fidock (2), Charlie Pughe (1), Alfie Sheppard, Tom Hawkins (1), Lee Chestnutt, Myles Tichband (3), Joe King (1), Joel Carnell (GK)

Premier League: Project 2010 3 - 19 Herne Bay United (Played: Saturday 10 October)
Reigning champions Herne Bay United took on the England under 17's in their first premier league game of the season. HBU were looking to hit the ground running and despite some early possession from the national side, who have entered into the Premier League to aid their development, it was United who struck first; Brendan Barker scoring four goals in the first ten minutes. England then re-focused their efforts in defence and they managed to shut out United for the next ten minutes. However they could not sustain it and in the final five minutes of the half United added a further six goals, three from veteran striker Paul McVey, two from Barker, and one from Joel Defiguruado who was making his debut for the champions. It wasn't all one way as England did manage to score with 42 seconds remaining in the half, a well taken finish from Keiran Brady to make the half time score Project 2010 110 HBU.
After the break it was England who created the early chances, they were moving the ball around well and were winning the 50/50 tackles. HBU had started the second half slowly and were duly punished when, with 20 minutes remaining Liam Conroy kept his nerve to finish from close range to make the score 210. HBU were not at their best, and despite immediately responding with a goal from Neil Austin, England continued to put pressure on the champion's defence. Then with 15 minutes left England were awarded a penalty, which Liam Conroy despatched into the top right hand corner of the net to make it 311. Again United responded immediately with Karl Smith scoring from close range to make it 312. Determined to stamp their authority on the game United stepped up the pace and in the last ten minutes they scored six more unanswered goals to make the final score Project 2010 319 HBU.
Following the game HBU captain Simon Hosking said: "We are pleased to get our campaign off to a winning start. We were definitely not at our best, and we know we need to improve. But the performance gives us something to build on. England U17's are not a bad side, and there were stages in the game where they pushed us back and created chances, they could provide a few shocks this season. The result was never in doubt though, we have goals throughout the team. It was especially pleasing to see our new signing Joel Defigurado getting on the score sheet. We have a big squad this season, and all the players know they will have to fight for their place. Our youngest player today was Joel (18) and our oldest player today was Nigel (41). It should be an interesting season."
England Coach Carlos Amaral said: "I am pleased with the performance, to me the result is not important, HBU are the best side in the country. It is the manner of our play that is important. The boys showed discipline in attack and defence. There were times when HBU over ran us, but on the whole it was a good performance. We are in the league for experience, we will learn from each game, and hopefully improve, we are building for the U17 European Championships, to be held in Rotherham next year. The team will be tested this year, that's exactly what I want."
HBU manager Phil McVey said: "It is good to get the first game out of the way with a win. We were far from our best. At times we showed glimpses of the hockey we are capable of. We will need to improve if we are to retain our title. However, we had three players playing today who were not in the squad last year. Veterans Paul McVey (40) and Nigel Mills (41), who have both been performing well in the veteran's side were selected for the first time in over a decade, and youngster Joel Defigurado was also making his debut for the club. It just goes to show you that if you are good enough, age is irrelevant. It sends a message out to all my players that no ones place in the team is secure. All three of the debutants played well, Paul scored four with Joel netting once. As for England, I have to say I was impressed. They showed they have ability, and even more important, they showed they have the temperament to handle pressure. To face the champions and to put up the fight they did showed great character. If they can continue to learn and develop, they stand every chance of making it to the final in the Euro championships next year. I wish them every success."
HBU team: Dave Garlick (GK), Karl Smith (2), Simon Hosking (c) (1), Joel Defigurado (1), Neil Austin (2), Nigel Mills, Brendan Barker (9), Paul McVey (4), Matt Barton. Manager: Phil McVey

CASC Status
Herne Bay United Roller Hockey & Skating Club is pleased to announce that it has obtained CASC (Community Amateur Sports Club) status with H M Revenue and Customs. The benefit to the club is that any donations to the club attract tax relief to individuals, sole traders and partnerships through the gift aid scheme or as a tax deductible expense before profits for companies. Gift Aid works by providing income tax relief to individuals, sole traders and partnerships on their gift or donation and allowing HBU to reclaim income tax on the gift from HMRC provided the donor is a UK taxpayer. The amount of tax benefit depends on whether the individual, sole trader or partnership pays income tax at the basic or higher rate. In both cases the club will receive an additional £28 for every £100 donated in the form of a tax rebate from HMRC. Furthermore, in the case of a higher tax payer, £25 will be refunded for every £100 he or she gives. This means between the club and individual they could benefit from a total tax refund of over £53.
If you wish to make a donation to the club to allow us to further develop roller hockey and roller dance in Herne Bay please contact the club treasurer, Kym Marsh, or Jon Barton.

Referees of all levels took advantage of this opportunity to test out the New Rules and players, too, experienced the implications of playing under them over the two day event. Unfortunately there were more refs in attendance on day 1 than day 2 but they all appreciated the exercise. Thanks to all of them.
Timekeepers, too, found the experience invaluable and it was a shame more did not attend on at least one of the days. One thing was evident from the weekend was that clubs will need three people on the timekeepers' table to ensure efficiency for all matches and tournaments. Thank you to those who did attend.
