Herne Bay United looked to continue the progress they made on the league leaders Grimsby and put on a strong performance. United started with the same team that beat Middlesbrough in their previous outing, playing strong and moving the ball with purpose. Captain Simon Hosking put the champions on the right foot with an unstoppable shot within 30 seconds of the start. United continued to wait and be patient and didn't over push and commit, United's next goal didn't come for 11 minutes, but looked dangerous on the break and punished Grimsby for their errors and in the final 13 minutes of the half United scored three times through Barker with the third coming from a defence splitting pass from teammate Karl Smith. United finished the half with a comfortable 4-0 lead.
United continued with the strategy of the first half and were rewarded almost immediately and looked in complete control scoring a further three goals with three counter attacks with some excellent team goals, Joel Figueiredo assisting with one and finishing one himself.
At this point United were comfortable with a seven goal lead but their concentration lapsed and Grimsby were given a renewed confidence after a being awarded a goal from a dubious decision on a 'did it didn't it' cross the line. United conceded a further four through Allan Johnson and Andrew Simms getting a hat-trick. United however, never let the pressure off scoring twice to keep daylight in the score and finished the game 9-5 victors.
Stand in Manager Dendy Hudson, who is not playing this week due to injury said: "We were impressive and dominating throughout, making some excellent team moves and creating lots of chances. Everyone was determined and fully committed to ensure three crucial points were gained. However, the last seven minutes need to be reviewed and has given us something to tactically discuss and work on at training."
United are now second in the table with a game in hand and have every chance of remaining in control if they keep their heads.

Herne Bay United's under 13's team competed in their fourth Eastern Counties tournament at the weekend. Their first game was against Ely Blue with HBU dominating the first half. A hat-trick for Alex Mount and one each for Luke Latham, Lewis Greenwood and Charlie Botting gave the team a commanding 6-0 lead at half time. However, they didn't start the second half as strongly and Ely Blue were able to have more chances than they were allowed in the first half. They were not able to score, though, and another goal each for Mount and Latham put the result beyond doubt. Final score HBU 8-0 Ely Blue.
Next they played Bury in the toughest game of the tournament. Mount opened the scoring through a penalty but Bury equalised from a direct free hit and then took the lead. After half time Bury scored two quick goals before Latham could reply for United. Bury scored again before disagreements about refereeing resulted in two players receiving blue cards and the manager a red, thus reducing United to two players. Bury scored again from the ensuing direct free hit to which United could not reply. Final score Bury 6-2 HBU.
The third game was against Norwich and this was another game where United had most of the possession. Another first half hat-trick for Mount and a goal each for Latham and Greenwood gave United a good lead with Norwich only scoring one from a direct free hit. The second half was quieter; Latham scored twice to complete his hat-trick for the game before Norwich scored the final goal from a penalty. Final score HBU 7-2 Norwich.
Finally the team played Ely Green in a game where the lead was constantly changing. Ely Green opened the scoring before Greenwood equalised straight away only to see Ely Green immediately take the lead again and then stretch it to two goals. Latham pulled one back but Ely Green regained their two goal lead before Latham scored twice to make things level at half time. United scored first in the second half through Mount but Ely Green soon equalised again. Greenwood scored and Mount then got two to give United a good lead. Ely Green then got one back immediately but Mount scored the final goal to give United a 9-6 win.

At the same time that HBU (1) were facing Grimsby at the pier, HBU (2) were facing the England U17's at Soham. United travelled to the match with only one sub as work and holiday commitments ruled out over half the players. Despite the weakened side the HBU veterans were determined to make it two wins out of three since their emergency call up to fulfil the premier league fixtures of HBU CSL who walked out earlier in the season.
United went 0-1 up after only 22 seconds; Phil McVey found Nigel Mills in England's penalty area whose first time finish found the back of the net. United's joy was short lived as the England U17's equalised 35 seconds later. The youngsters then proceeded to dominate the play, scoring three more unanswered goals to go 4-1 up with five minutes left in the half. United still appeared to be extremely rusty, but through sheer determination they pulled the score back to 4-4 at halftime with two goals from Paul McVey and another from Mills.
Two minutes into the second half England went 5-4 up and now believed they could go on and win the game. The Champions of yesteryear though were not going to give the game up and using all of their considerable experience levelled the game through Paul McVey with 18 minutes remaining. The momentum was now with the veteran side, they pulled ahead with three unanswered goals, two from Phil McVey and one from Nick Barton to make the score 5-8 with seven minutes remaining. The game was now effectively over, and although the England U17's did manage to score two more, United never let the three goal cushion go, and in the end ran out comfortable winners 7-11.
Following the game England manager Carlos Amaral said: "This was a good test for my players. Although HBU are slow, they play with their heads, they use their experience to keep the ball and create chances, they are not to be under estimated. My players have learnt a lot from tonight's game, this can only be good for England."
Forty-seven year old Nigel Mills said: "We are pleased with the win; this young England side shows great promise, at times they had us under real pressure and we had to use all of our experience to get the victory. It's amazing to think we had already won the Premier League 3 years in a row before any of them had even been born."
Having just received word from the pier that HBU (1) had defeated Grimsby 9-5 to go top of the premier league, United's Club Coach Phil McVey added: "I am thrilled with both results. Unfortunately I cannot be in two places at once, so I was desperate for news of the first team the moment this game finished. The Grimsby match was a must win game if HBU (1) are to secure the title again, to carry on the legacy which began with us veterans, who won the premier league for the first time all those years ago. It's just a shame for the veterans that the CSL players who walked out, didn't go earlier the season. They lost the first three games of the season before walking out. If they had gone sooner HBU might be sitting first and second in the premier league. Mind you with everyone beating everyone, it's possible we can make first and third place."

Three Herne Bay United teams were in action for the third Southern Counties Under 13's tournament of the season held at the Pier on Sunday. The first game saw the under 11's team, Kent Connections, facing an East Grinstead side which included three borrowed under 15 HBU players. Kent Connections played well and held their opponents until five minutes from the break when East Grinstead took the lead. However, the under 11's were quick to equalise through Tom Barton and then added another just before the whistle from Jamie McVey. East Grinstead equalised early in the second half but the under 11's pulled ahead again through Oliver Hudson before the East Grinstead team scored two quick goals to win the game 4-3.
Next HBU JK Metals took on Farnham who were fielding a replacement goalkeeper who had never tried this position before. The strength of the JK Metals team overwhelmed their more inexperienced opponents and knocked up a huge tally. Four goals from Michael Gregory, two from George Kohler, three for Luke Latham, three for David Martindale and one for Charlie Botting gave them a 14-0 half time lead. The second half continued the onslaught on the Farnham goal; two more for Latham, three for Botting, two for Martindale and one for Gregory concluded the 22-0 whitewash.
Kent Connections then played HBU Everlast who were playing with no reserves. Their better age and experience helped Everlast to a four goal lead at half time; Max Osborne, Kier Maeers twice and Sam Whiffen were all on target. They stretched their lead through two more goals for Osborne in the middle of the second half. However Kent Connections pulled two back to make sure that their older club mates didn't have all the play, both from Barton. Final score Kent Connections 2-6 Everlast.
JK Metals then returned to the rink to play East Grinstead and had the majority of the play through both halves. A goal each for Kohler and Martindale gave them a 2-0 lead at the break with two from Gregory and one for Latham in the second completing a 5-0 win.
Next Everlast faced Farnham and also gave their rookie keeper a hard time. Dominating the play they scored 11 in the first half; Maeers (2), Whiffen (2), Osborne (4) and Natham Emslie (3), and a further nine in the second; Maeers (4), Whiffen (2) and Osborne (3), to complete their 20-0 rout.
Kent Connections then played JK Metals in the best game of the tournament. Some excellent end-to-end hockey saw McVey take the lead for Kent Connections before JK Metals imediately got two through Kohler and Gregory. JK Metals then scored an own goal to make things levels again but a goal from Connor Botting put the under 11's in front. Latham then scored twice to retake the lead. Kent Connections brought the score level gain before the break through Barton. The excitement continued into the second half with Kent Connections scoring first through Hudson only to see Latham equalise and then take the lead through two quick goals for JK Metals. Luca Commentucci levelled the score just 30 seconds later and things remained equal until two minutes to go when Latham and then Gregory opened a two goal lead for JK Metals. Kent Connections scored a last gasp goal with four seconds remaining from Barton but it wasn't quite enough and JK Metals narrowly beat their younger clubmates 8-7.
After the previous game's excitement the match between East Grinstead and Everlast was a much quieter affair. Osborne and Maeers both scored in first half to give Everlast a 2-0 lead at the break but East Grinstead scored two of their own in the second half. It seemed that the match would end as a draw but Osborne scored in the final two seconds to claim a 3-2 victory for Everlast.
The final game saw Kent Connections playing Farnham. Plenty of good team hockey saw them able to capitalise on the goalie's inexperience with all of the team netting during the match. Goals from Commentucci, McVey, Botting (2), Britany Dyball and Hudson (2) with one in reply from Farnham gave the youngsters a 7-1 lead at half time. They extended this in the second half with further goals from Dyball (2), Botting (2), McVey (2) and Barton (3) to give Farnham their final drubbing of the day, 16-1.
These results mean that Everlast, JK Metals and Kent Connections remain in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places respectively.
Teams:
Kent Connections: Tom Barton, Connor Botting, Luca Commentucci, Britany Dyball, Oliver Hudson, Jamie McVey, Rhys Young
Everlast: Nathan Emslie, Kier Maeers, Guy Osborne, Max Osborne, Sam Whiffen
JK Metals: Charlie Botting, Jarod Dyball, Michael Gregory, David Martindale, George Kohler, Luke Latham

The next morning HBU2 faced local rivals Herne Bay, this looked like it would a close game. United though, had taken a great deal of confidence from the previous nights game against Bury, and had decided to play a more aggressive defensive system, man to man marking the Bay side. After a tense opening to the game, United settled better and scored first, Paul McVey scoring from close range to make it 1-0. It didn't take long for the Bay to equalise, and after a slack pass from Phil McVey, Herne Bay's Steve Parkes tied the game at 1-1. United's passing game was still a little rusty but improving all the time, with ten minutes left in the half, Chris Espejo won the ball in defence, sprinted the length of the rink and coolly slotted the ball home to make it 2-1. Again the Bay responded immediately through Steve Parkes to tie the game (2-2). United were now beginning to dominate play and two unanswered goals from Nigel Mills made the score 4-2 to United at the break.
The second half saw United step up a level. Their team game was improving with every passing minute, gradually Herne Bay's defence was being put under more and more pressure. The chances started to come, and the United players started to enjoy themselves. Goals came from all over the team as Chris Espejo scored two more, Phil McVey (2), and Paul McVey (1). Although Herne Bay scored three more of their own United ran out comfortable 9-5 winners.
Following the game HBU's Nigel Mills said: "As a team we haven’t all played together in the Premier league since we played in the title winning side in the 1992/93 season, so we didn't really know what to expect. We know we used to be a good side, but we were up against the current young stars of the game in the match against Bury last night. We pushed them all the way, and to lose 4-2 is a credit to us. The average age of our team is 37, whereas Bury's average age is 22. On another day we could have won that game. We pushed on from that performance, and we were rewarded with a very satisfying win today. It's been a long time since we have experienced this amount of hockey in a weekend, especially at this level, and I feel every one of my 47 years. I won't be able to move for a week."
HBU captain Phil McVey added: "Although we are veteran's we are still a very good side, and we showed this weekend that we are an extremely tough side to beat. We are looking forward to the challenge of facing the cream of English roller hockey. Twenty years ago we were the best in the country, it's amazing to think we can still compete. One of our team (Richard Walker) hasn't put on a pair of skates on for 15 years until last week!! It's nice to pick up our first win, hopefully we can win a few more before the season it out. There's no pressure on us, we just have to fulfil the fixtures. Every team in the league has to play us at the pier, it has always been a fortress for us, so let's see if we can upset a few teams this year."
HBU team: (goals in both matches) Garrett Priestley (GK), Jason Robertson (GK), Jon Barton, Nigel Mills (3), Chris Espejo (3), Phil McVey (capt) (2), Paul McVey (3), Steve Clarke, Richard Walker, Nick Barton.

This weekend saw HBU2 in Premier League action for the first time following the shock defection of virtually the entire HBU CSL squad and coach. It was going to be a baptism of fire for the players. The new look HBU2 were away to Bury in their first match of the weekend. HBU2 is made up of the HBU veterans and two players who refused to leave the club when the mass exodus took place. Bury had drawn 5-5 with HBU’s first team earlier in the season so it was always going to be a tough game.
HBU2 played a tight defence and hoped to make their opponents over commit and then catch them on the break. The tactic worked perfectly as Bury struggled to create any chances. With 12 minutes remaining in the half United captain Phil McVey fired a rink long pass to teammate Nigel Mills, who deflected the ball past a helpless keeper to put United 0-1 up. Bury were shocked by the goal, and came at United even harder. United continued to soak up pressure and hit Bury on the break. Steve Clarke won the ball on the halfway line and beat Bury's last defender, who tripped him up. Somehow, as he was falling, he managed to get the shot off, unfortunately missing the target. The ref should have awarded a penalty and sin-binned the Bury defender. However he didn’t, as he said he played the advantage. Two minutes later Clarke received a ball to the head and had to be taken to the hospital for stitches to be applied. United did not let this affect them and at half-time the score was 0-1 to United.
Bury came at United straight from the opening whistle of the second half, and were rewarded almost immediately when they scored from a tight angle to make it 1-1 with only a minute of the half gone. Four minutes later they made it 2-1. Bury now had the momentum, and the game looked to be slipping away from the United veterans. Using all their experience HBU battled on, they stunned Bury with 12 minutes left, another long pass from Phil McVey found his brother Paul who deflected the ball past the Bury keeper, a carbon copy of their first goal to tie the game at 2-2. However as the half went on United started to tire, with seven minutes left Bury went 3-2 ahead, and it looked like there was no way back for United. Then with four minutes left Phil McVey won the ball and beat the last defender, only to be scythed down. A blue card and sin-bin should have shown to the Bury player. To everyone's amazement this did not happen, a team foul was awarded instead. A penalty was awarded which Phil McVey missed. United now had to throw caution to the wind if they were going to get anything out of the game. With two minutes left Phil McVey earned a blue card and was sin-binned for a foul. Bury scored the resulting penalty to make it 4-2. Despite their best efforts United ran out losers 4-2.

After United's loss last weekend they needed to come out fighting to put the title back on track. The weekend didn't start out well when United, already down to a bare team as last weekend due to players' work commitments, lost their only sub down to illness and so found themselves travelling to League leaders Middlesbrough with no substitutes. This would mean playing a very disciplined game to enable the five players to make it through the game. United opted for a box diamond defence to allow them to catch Middlesbrough on the break and conserve energy. This paid off as Neil Austin finished in the top corner after just two minutes. United continued well but Middlesbrough had a penalty shot but failed to make it count. The game continued to flow openly and an error from United released
Middlesbrough’s Michael Ableson who equalized. Simon Hosking then thought he had scored and although was fouled he finished well. Initially annoyed at the disallowed goal, United were awarded with a penalty shot, Hosking made no mistake replacing the goal he felt should have been left standing. Middlesbrough kept on pushing and were awarded shortly afterwards with a good team goal finished well from Owen Stewart. The game remained tight for the majority of the half, Middlesbrough with most of the possession but failing to break United down. With six minutes remaining United took control with Brendan Barker finishing with flick up and hit from behind the goal, Middlesbrough seemed to become unhinged and lapsed with United being awarded a direct free hit after Owen Stewart was sin-bined for slashing Barker, who made no mistake in finishing his chance and in Middlesbrough’s confusion Barker got his hat trick and United went into the break with a 5-2 lead.
Middlesbrough came out strong and quickly scored their third and began creating chances but with United’s ‘keeper Dan Barton in fine form and the defence holding firm Middlesbrough's belief was faltering and heads were dropping. Again United worked the ball well never over committing pulling Middlesbrough out of position and eventually giving Hosking the opening he needed to neatly beat their ‘keeper for United’s sixth. United seemed in control and were showing good discipline, one slight mistake and a lucky finish for Middlesbrough's fourth and keeping some pressure on United. Again, as in the first half, a controlled game with neither team over pushing or committing but as in the first half the chances again came to United as Middlesbrough's belief dropped with their frustration of being unable to break United, with Barker scoring his fourth and a much improved performance from the young Joel Figueiredo who stepped up to the challenge of the weekend and scored his first of the game, a volley against an over committed Dan Palmer. United completed the dismantling of the league leaders with a suprise push shot from Captain Hosking. United out and out winners 4-9.
Clive Bassom, United's stand-in manager for his first game hit the ground running with such an emphatic victory over the league leaders, a team that has been challenging United for the last two seasons, said: "Every player in the team did the job that was asked. Yes, mistakes were made but the job was superbly done"
Team list:
HBU: Dan Barton, Joel Figueiredo(1), Simon Hosking (capt) (3), Neil Austin (1), Brendan Barker( 4), Manager: Clive Bassom
Middlesbrough: Gary Todd, John Jones (1), Marc Rutland, Owen Stewart (1), Peter Lonsdale, Dan Palmer, Beth Cook, Michael Ableson (capt) (1), Sam Kay(1), Will Smith, Manager: Ray Stewart

Herne Bay United travelled to Grimsby at the weekend in the National Premier League. United are currently second in the table after dropping valuable points at Bury in their last league game with a draw and giving the advantage to the current league leaders Middlesbrough. United made the trip with a bare squad of only five out players allowing them only one possible substitute. This was due to team members work commitments being unable to make the journey. To add to the difficulties a motorway closure delayed their journey meaning a late start and having to go straight into the game. However, United started strong and scored after one and a half minutes. The game settled somewhat, United kept on the pressure but failed to score their chances. Grimsby started to get stronger scoring through Johnson and levelling the game. United soon regained the lead through Hosking scoring from a penalty and Barker scoring straight after a time out. United seemed to now have some control. Grimsby became rattled and their physical aspect of the game came out. However the referees failed to reward United for the fouls and Grimsby's tactics began to work with a string of errors from United. Grimsby scored three weak goals in the remainder of the half going into the break with a 4-3 lead over the champions.
United failed to regain any control in the start of the second half and with the referees missing numerous fouls began to destroy what should have been a good hockey game. Grimsby came out first with a goal, putting daylight between them and the champions. United as usual showed passion and though their finishing was not that of what you would expect they battled and scored a fourth and when finally rewarded with a much deserved penalty equalised 5-5. United seemed to be turning it around against all odds with a good team and the referees against them. But a foul by Hosking, who was unbelievably the first to be carded in this physical clash under the new rules aimed at making the game less physical, was only awarded the card after asking for it. Grimsby now with a power play and a direct free hit scored regaining the lead. United failed to get back into the game and against the tide with players obtaining injuries let the game go losing 8-5.
A point to be noticed is the injuries obtained that weren't self inflicted and the fact in the first half seven team fouls were made by Grimsby and three by United. How is it possible the referees awarded not one team foul to either team in a much more physical second half from a point of a spectator seems impossible and would hope the NRHA looks in to these referee's understanding of the new rules and are we playing them only some of the time as it suits? The new rules were introduced with the explanation of bringing the physical side of the game down yet in the UK it seems to have had the opposite affect. This game was closer to an Ice Hockey than a Roller Hockey one.
Now have United lost the edge they once had and the majority of the players this weekend being over 30, is this the turning point? United lost to Grimsby away last season and now again to what was once a comfortable fixture for them. United have now dropped five points this season. Can United turn it around? It is still within their grasp but every game is a final and no more slip ups can be afforded. If United can win all their remaining games with only one being away they will retain the title. The biggest game for United's season comes this weekend when they travel to Middlesbrough, the current league leaders. If United win this they will show all is still to play for and take the challenge back to the other teams in the league to come to Herne Bay and take the title from them in their home rink the Pier Pavilion. United again won't be at full strength and players carrying injuries, but will play for the win and the hope of putting this seasons campaign back on course to win their 16th premier league title.
HBU Manager Phil McVey said: "Take nothing away from Grimsby, they deserved the win. However what I witnessed today was not a game of roller hockey, it was a game of roller hockey from 20 - 30 years ago. The game was much more physical back then. If you watch a game of football from 30 years ago, that too was a much more physical game where defenders were allowed to kick lumps out of their opponents. Well that was what we saw today. Personally I would have loved to play in the match, I used to enjoy that type of hockey, however that is not what roller hockey should be now. The game has moved on, and cynical physical defending should be a thing of the past. The World body is trying to eliminate that behaviour from the game. Unfortunately some of the referees have no idea what the new rules are, and they don't know how to implement them. They are destroying the sport we love.
"I don't want it to sound like sour grapes, because HBU should win no matter how bad the refs are. I would be making these exact comments if we had won the game. When the new rules were introduced at the start of the season I told all who would listen that the directives the English Association sent out to all the referees was wrong, and that there would be no consistency from the refs, and the result will be players will have less respect for both the game, and the referees. At the moment we are involved in two premier leagues, one where the game is reffed correctly and any cynical physical defending results is punished, and one where it is condoned and rewarded. HBU have not given up on the title, it is still in our hands, if we win all of remaining games we will win the league. That is our plan."

Herne Bay United Under 13's faced Cottenham in the semi-finals of the National Cup. Although Cottenham started strongly United slowly took control of the game. Cottenham were finding it hard to break through United's defence, and HBU's Alex Mount was in fine form scoring all of HBU's five first half goals. At the break it was 5-2 to United.
The second half was a similar story to the first, Cottenham threatened United's goal but could not regulary find a way past keeper Jarod Dyball in United's goal. United on the other hand looked dangerous in every attack. Alex Mount scored three more to take his tally to eight for the match, whilst team-mate Max Osbourne scored twice (both volleys) to make the final score 10-4.
HBU will now face Bury in the Cup Finals in July.

Herne Bay United Under 15's played Ely in the quarter-finals. United were the favourites going into the match, however they started slowly, and it was Ely who scored first to go 0-1 up. They did not stay in front for long as Alex Mount soon levelled the score. Ely pushed again and they were rewarded with a goal. Mount again pulled one back to tie the game at 2-2. United were now finding their feet, and as they settled down and started passing, the chances started to come. Ashley Barton scored two unanswered goals to make it HBU 4-2 Ely at halftime.
Ely came out firing in the second half, and within five minutes had levelled the game at 4-4. Ely then went 5-4 ahead and United were in trouble. Then with seven minutes remaining Alex Mount scored to tie the game at 5-5, he scored again a minute later to put United 6-5 in front. Ely though refused to give in, and with three minutes left they equalised (6-6). The game could now go either way, both teams had chances, and with only a minute left on the clock Ashley Barton scored with a well taken shot to make it 7-6. Ely had no time to come back, and United squeezed through into the semi's which were to take place two hours later.
HBU faced arch rivals Bury in the Semi final. After the poor performance in the previous match United coach Phil McVey had given the players strict instructions on how to defend against Bury. This was a huge change in defensive tactics from the previous game. United were going into this game as under dogs, Bury were the favourites for the competition, their captain being one of the best in the country in this age group. McVey had decided to put two players on him all the time to stop him playing. The two players assigned this role were Alex Mount and Lewis Greenwood, both would need to put in disciplined performances if the tactic was to work.
Following their poor performance in the previous match the United players were determined to show McVey what they could do, and with Mount and Greenwood doing an excellent job marking the Bury captain, Ashley Barton and Katie McVey were dealing with the three remaining Bury players excellently, Bury were becoming frustrated. It wasn't long before United capitalised with Ashley Barton scoring to make it 1-0. Bury though, are a good side and they levelled to make it 1-1, United's tactic was working, and with Mount and Greenwood working as a pair they robbed the ball from the Bury player and attacked, Greenwood passing to Mount who scored to make it 2-1. Again Bury came back at United and the score at half-time was 2-2. United coach Phil McVey then brought on Max Osbourne for Greenwood and Alice Osborne-Luck for Katie McVey. The changes worked perfectly as the fresh legs paid off, Bury could not live with the constant pressure put on them by the United defence, on two occasions in quick succession Osbourne released Mount who finished expertly to make it 4-2. Then with Osbourne tiring, he was changed for Luke Latham to continue to press and harry the opposition. Latham was magnificent against the tiring opponents scoring twice in quick succession to make it 6-2 with five minutes remaining. Josh Emslie was then brought on for Osborne-Luck to keep it tight at the back. With no more goals in the game, United had run out comfortable 6-2 winners.
At the end of a long day HBU coach Phil McVey said: "I was pleased with the U13's performance in their semi. Although they did not set the world alight, a professional workman-like performance was enough to see them through. We now have plenty of time to improve before the final. What was most pleasing was the U15 side. I was very disappointed with their quarterfinal performance against Ely, and we were lucky to make it through to the semi. I had a long talk with the players, I changed the tactics, it was a risky move, for the tactics to work every single player had to carryout their instructions to the letter. To their credit they did. The entire team gave everything they had. They played with discipline, energy and style. In my opinion it was the most complete performance by any team at any level that I have seen for sometime. They proved they can do it, I now expect them to do it every time they play. We have another tough challenge as we will face Peterborough in the final."
Finals are to take place on Saturday 17 July.

Last weekend Herne Bay United played a friendly against local rivals Herne Bay. The players from both teams were very excited, for many of them this was their first competitive match. In front of a crowd of over a 100 the players did not disappoint, the match was exciting from beginning to end. It was United who took an early lead going two goals up through Josh Osbourne. However Herne Bay recovered well and pulled one back just before halftime to make it 2-1 at the break. The second half was equally close, as both teams tired, gaps appeared in both defences. The two keepers had to be at their best as both sides created numerous chances. Herne Bay were the first to score making it 2-2, United then went ahead again through Noah Latham, scoring his first ever goal, however Herne Bay hit back immediately to level the game at 3-3. The game looked to be heading to a draw, but with two minutes left Noah Latham scored again to make the final score 4-3 to United.
HBU President Ron Barker said: "Everyone enjoyed the game, the fans, players and coaches. It's great to see the kids all enjoying themselves. They are the future of the game. We need to do all we can to nuture and encourage all of them. Both teams played some good stuff. The future for both clubs is bright."

The second Southern Counties under 13's tournament took place on Sunday at the Pier. The first game was between HBU JK Metals, an under 13's team and HBU Kent Connections, an under 11's team. To begin JK Metals had more opportunities although only Luke Latham was able to get past the Kent Connections' defence. As the half progressed the younger team pressured their opponents more and more, and their hard work was rewarded by a Tom Barton goal to leave the teams equal at half time. The second half saw JK Metals make the most of the age advantage with two more Latham goals and another from Michael Gregory giving them a 4-1 victory.
Next HBU's other under 13 team, Everlast, played East Grinstead. Good teamwork saw them outplay their more inexperienced opponents and three goals for Kier Maeers, two for Sam Whiffen and one each for Max Osborne and Lewis Greenwood gave them a commanding 7-0 lead at half time. However, their opponents were determined to give them a good game and the second half was not so one-way, although Everlast stretched their lead through another two for Maeers and one more for Whiffen to which East Grinstead were unable to reply. Final score 10-0.
JK Metals then played Farnham who took the lead after a few minutes. Neither team was then able to break through the other's defence until three goals in the final minute, two for Latham and one for Alex Mount, saw JK Metals take a 3-1 lead to the break. The second half saw JK Metals in command of the game with a hat-trick for David Martindale and one each for George Kohler, Latham and Gregory giving the HBU side a 9-1 win.
Next Kent Connections faced Everlast. Despite good work from the younger side Everlast seemed to be taking control after goals for Greenwood, Whiffen and two for Osborne, but Kent Connections got back into the game when Barton scored two. However, the second half saw Everlast power past their younger clubmates; two goals each from Greenwood, Maeers and Osborne giving them a 10-2 win.
The next game was JK Metals against East Grinstead with the HBU side in control for the first half. Two goals each for Mount, Gregory and Latham and one for Kohler were only replied to once. However, the second half was much more even; two goals for Mount, one for Latham and one for Martindale, were matched by three for East Grinstead. The first half tally proved too much to overcome though and JK Metals won 11-4.
Kent Connections' final game was against Farnham in an entertaining and hard fought match. Farnham scored just a minute into the game but Kent Connections equalised imediately through Britany Dyball. In a half offering lots of chances to both teams only Farnham were able to score again to take one goal lead to the break. Again Farnham grabbed a goal straight from the start of the game and once more Kent Connections replied imediately, this time through Jamie McVey. Farnham scored again to give them a two goal lead but sheer determination and excellent teamwork resulted in another goal from McVey as well as one each for Josh Butcher and Luca Commentucci for Kent Connections to get a well deserved 5-4 win.
JK Metals and Everlast then faced each other for their final game. This game had been a 10-1 victory to Everlast when the teams met at the previous tournament but JK Metals worked hard on their passing in this game with the desired results. Two goals each from Mount, Latham and Gregory with no reply saw them 6-0 up at half time. Everlast upped their game for the second half and Greenwood scored a hat-trick but with another JK Metals goal from Latham they had done enough to win 7-3.
League placings remain unchanged from the last tournament; 1st - Everlast, 2nd - JK Metals, 3rd - Kent Connections, 4th -Farnham, 5th - East Grinstead
Teams:
JK Metals: Charlie Botting, Jarod Dyball, Michael Gregory, George Kohler, Luke Latham, David Martindale, Alex Mount
Everlast: Charlie Burgess, Nathan Emslie, Lewis Greenwood, Kier Maeers, Guy Osborne, Max Osborne, Sam Whiffen

HBU Ultras played their second game of the Kent League campaign on Saturday evening. East Grinstead fielded a bare side due to player availability. The Ultras were made up of six of HBU's Premier League side, the current National Champions, so East Grinstead had a hard task for their first game of the League. HBU were strong from the offset and had a 6-0 lead at half time, and never looked uncomfortable. They continued their dominance with East Grinstead only really having one clear chance with a penalty they failed to convert. East Grinstead showed the tiredness of a team without subs and HBU continued to push with a final score of 14-0.
HBU Ultras manger Carlos Ismael said: "I think we played at a very high tempo throughout the whole match. Ok, the opposition was not strong but I am very happy with the team's commitment who lead to high tempo. We created many goal opportunities and we scored only 14. In my opinion a low turnover for the opportunities created. We have to give some merit to the other team, but on occasions we should have scored. Nobody is abated from that fact. All in all, an excellent performance. Needs to be seen the results versus stronger opposition, e.g, the other HBU team and Herne Bay."

Reigning National Champions Herne Bay United played the home leg of their CERS Cup game against Italian side Giovinazzo at the Pier on Saturday night. The referee was from Portugal. The large crowd in attendance were not disappointed as HBU put on a real fight against their Italian rivals. The game was an extremely hard fought encounter. HBU started well and took the game to Giovinazzo. Neither could break down their opponents defence. However with 14 minutes remaining in the half the Italian's no.6 scored with a well taken finish to make it 0-1. HBU fought back, but despite Barker, Hosking, Hudson and Jackson all having clear chances to score the Italians held firm and at half time the score was 0-1.
The second half was as hard fought as the first. United's Joel Defiguerado picked up a blue card within the first 13 seconds of the half. This meant a Direct Free Hit was awarded to the visitors and United were reduced to three men for two minutes. United keeper (David Garlick) saved the Direct Free Hit and United's three out players defended heroically to keep the Italians out until the time penalty was served and they could get another player on. The game then settled back down with both teams looking very evenly matched. Then with 18 minutes remaining Barker picked up a blue card and a two minute sinbin. Again Garlick saved the Direct Free Hit and the United players managed to see out the power play without conceding. In fact, although a man down, United created four or five clear cut chances during the power play, and could have easily levelled but for some fine saves from the Italian Keeper. Giovinazzo doubled their lead with 16 minutes remaining when their no.7 scored from close range. They went further ahead when their no.4 scored to make it 0-3 with ten minutes remaining. United re-doubled their efforts in attack, with Hosking, Barker and Singleton all coming close. Then with six minutes left the home side's attacking endeavours paid off when Simon Hosking beat the Italian defender before rounding the keeper and slotting the ball home to make it 1-3. United now had the bit between their teeth and were pressing Giovinazzo all over the rink. Then with five minutes to go United striker Sam Jackson unleashed a powerful shot which took a wicked deflection hitting his teammate Neil Austin in the forehead. The game was then stopped for ten minutes as Austin's head was split open by the ball; Austin received medical attention and the blood was cleaned up. When the game resumed United pressed for another goal, leaving gaps at the back. With one minute remaining it was Hosking's turn to pick up a blue card and a sin bin penalty after a firm challenge. Again Garlick saved the resulting Direct Free Hit. However United could not keep the Italians out and with less than a second left on the clock and virtually on the final whistle the Italian no.6 scored to make the final score 1-4.
After the game United Captain Simon Hosking said: "We are disappointed not to get the win tonight, we fought them all the way. On another night we might have scored five or six ourselves. We hope the fans enjoyed it. Tonight was all about the fans."
United Coach Phil McVey added: "It was an extremely close match which could have gone either way. I am delighted with the performance of the side. We held the ball well, our team game was the best it has been for a couple of years, and we showed the professionals that we can play a bit. The lads were desperate to put on a good showing for the fans. On behalf of all the players I would like to thank all our loyal supporters and all the people who work behind the scene to make these nights happen. I would also like to wish our opponents the very best for their next matches in the CERS CUP."

The Kent County Roller Hockey Association (KCRHA) got the 2009/2010 season underway on Saturday night with a senior and a junior match at the Pier Pavilion. This was the first time the league has played with the full new rules of the game. The senior match was between HBU Ultras and Wilbees fielded by the Herne Bay club. With the recent defection of 17 players from HBU to the Invicta club which plays out of Faversham, HBU fielded what was pretty much a Premier League side. Wilbees were a team of similar standard players but now veterans supplemented by Portuguese import Tiago de Sousa.
HBU expected to rattle up a large score but somehow Wilbees managed to keep up their energy backed by exceptional goal-keeping from Paul Dalton. The final score was 6-1 to the Ultras with Wilbee's goal slotted home by John Chalk from a breakaway after the Ultras got caught with too many players up the floor.
The match marked a return by Carlos Ismael managing the Ultras team which includes his son Joel. Carlos was responsible for much of the development of the players in the HBU first team and after the match he commented: "We need to go back to some of the basics as we failed far too many attacks, but I have not enjoyed a hockey match so much in a long time".
HBU Ultras Team: Brendan Barker (1), Neil Austin (2), Joe Singleton (2), Joel de Figueiredo (1) Karl Smith, Myles Barker, Jamie Williamson (GK)

The three match programme on Sunday morning included teams from HBU, East Grinstead and guests Cottenham from near Cambridge. Although the competition was "under 17" HBU fielded an under 15 team because of the loss of players from this age-group to Invicta. HBU has an extensive under 13 squad but many of the under 13 players away at a tournament in Eastern Counties leaving a bare team facing a mountain to climb in both experience and age. As it happened, Cottenham had players out through illness which set the scene for the matches to be more even than otherwise might have been the case.
The results were: East Grinstead 4-0 HBU, East Grinstead 6-4 Cottenham, Cottenham 9-1 HBU.
In the first match HBU showed their promise and were capable of as many attacks as the opposition but unable to beat the East Grinstead goalkeeper. The performance in the match against Cottenham was even better but Cottenham had regained some form and HBU had very tired legs having played the first match with no reserves to call upon. HBU's goal came from Max Osborne and his brother, Guy Osborne put in a formidable performance in goal for HBU.

While the JK Metals Team had the more experienced players, the SVH Team set about over-coming this with a high energy performance. The match remained close to the end with JK Metals winning by just one goal. Final result 4-3.

Herne Bay United travelled to Bury for their forth League game of the season. United were travelling confident with a strong side and good
results so far in the League expected to have the edge. United were coming off the back of playing the Italian side Giovinazzo, and success
at The Canterbury and District Awards 2009 with the club winning Club of 2009, Phil McVey winning Coach 2009 and Brendan Barker getting Senior
Sports Performer 2009.
United looked strong at the start, the first five being David Garlick, Neil Austin, Brendan Barker, Joe Singleton and Joel Figueiredo linking up well and playing the ball around comfortably. United's first goal came through a direct free hit after a hook by Ricky Jupp on Barker, who made no mistake finishing from the spot. United continued to dominate with very few chances being created by Bury, United were failing and the usual difficulties encountered at Bury's home rink were showing. Dave Garlick made some excellent saves stopping from the spot whilst Bury were on the power play after Karl Smith was sin-binned for two minutes. Bury capitalized on the extra player and Jupp finished after a weak pass from United whilst under pressure. Bury's renewed confidence lead to a second goal but United showed their
strength creating chance after chance, the pressure causing Jupp to crack and he received his second blue of the match. Barker converting the
chance given to him for a second time and then went to half time level.
After the break Bury came out the strongest; Smith receiving his second blue and Bury converting, and then taking another and a strong lead of 4-2. The pressure was now on for the boys from Herne Bay and with some battling, Barker getting his third of the game from the spot and his fourth in open play after numerous team efforts. United looked as
champions and were coming at Bury determined not to be beaten but after a failed pass Bury took a shock lead with only one minute thirty nine seconds left of play. United's Austin stepped up and equalised to rescue a point with just fifteen seconds left. United again had a final opportunity and were so close to nipping the victory but was not to be.
United's manager Phil McVey was disappointed with the teams
performance with a game that should have just been a formality and said: "Though our performance was not at it's best, referee decisions today played a major part and a game changing decision when Simon Hosking was hooked by Bury's keeper Matt Conroy. The referee failed to follow the rule guidance, and was explained by the referee at half time accidental or not a hook will be punished by a blue card and sin binned. This was not done and could have had a major affect on the game. However with fifteen seconds left of play we have taken a point and our title race should not be affected though we have given our rivals unnecessary belief".

The weekend of the 20/21 November was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Herne Bay United, with the Senior team travelling to Giovinazzo Italy, for the away leg of the European Cup, and the Club having been nominated for three possible awards at the Canterbury and District Sports Awards 2009. The news on Friday drifted in that HBU had had a successful evening at the awards with Herne Bay United winning the award for Club 2009, Philip McVey winning Coach of the year 2009 and Brendan Barker winning Senior Sports Performer 2009. It was hoped that this success could be translated into the coming game against the Italians.
Unfortunately it was not to be. United were caught slow out of the blocks conceding three quick goals, the first from a defensive error resulting in some great skill from a young Giovinazzo player (number 6, one to watch), the second from a power play after a foul committed by Neil Austin who was sent to sin bin for two minutes and the third from a penalty.
United were being punished by the new rules which were being played somewhat stricter than they were being implemented back in the UK and what they were used to.
United regrouped and after the initial three goals and some changes to the defensive strategy began to hold off the Italians. United were having chances; one close range effort that should have been a goal and number of chances from team plays, but United were failing to convert. From an outside perspective United seemed to struggle with the rink surface and lacked grip. This is an unfortunate part of amateur sport where players have wheels they hope will perform on the majority of surfaces to save cost, where the professional counterparts have a selection of possible options and can change wheels depending on the surface - a luxury United cannot afford. United showed strength and a stronger second half performance showed promise for the coming home leg.
The atmosphere in Italy was truly what matches of old were like with nearly a full house with drums and ticker tape, the people were very respectful of the English and the hospitality shown was second to none and they truly were tremendous hosts. Giovinazzo are a team for the future and managed by what many players of old would have considered the greatest player of his time, Marzella.
Manager Phil McVey was not too down hearted and was looking forward to the home leg saying: "Yes a big defeat, however I feel a fair result on our performance. Taking away the early goals the game would have been different and 6-2 or 3 would've been easier to swallow. We now must look forward to the home leg of which I have no doubt will be a different affair, a match to remember we hope for the supporters. The Italians will have to adapt to our rink which will be as it was for us in Italy not so easy, also we will not be caught napping at the start for a second time.
Team: Dan Barton, Jamie Williamson (GKs), Neil Austin, Brendan Barker, Joel de Figueiredo, Simon Hosking, Sam Jackson, Joe Singleton, Karl Smith, Nigel Mills.

Sunday 15 November saw twelve Herne Bay United under 13 players in two teams travel up to Farnham to represent the club in the 2009 Farnham Shield. In addition to our two teams, HBU 1 and HBU2, there were teams from Bury, Cottenham and Farnham. Unfortunately the late arrangement of this fixture meant that both regular goalkeepers were unavailable and so Max Osborne and David Martindale, neither of whom had ever kept goal before, volunteered to put on the number 10 shirt.
HBU 2's first game was against a strong Cottenham side, but they weren't overawed and made a bright start with Kier Maeers prompting the Cottenham keeper to make a smart save early on. Cottenham started to press, and scored twice in quick succession and then added a third after a spell of nice HBU interplay which they unfortunately couldn't convert. HBU 2 responded with a Luke Latham goal, receiving the ball from a Keir Maeers cross and lifting it over the diving Cottenham keeper. Latham scored again soon after with a really powerful slap shot from out wide and suddenly HBU 2 were back in the game. Right on halftime however, Cottenham scored their fourth and then a fifth straight after halftime which took the game away from United. Cottenham scored on four other occasions to make the final score 9-2.
HBU 2's second game saw them taking on HBU 1 and this turned out to be a really exciting game. Luke Latham opened the scoring with a typical charge at the opposition ending up one on one with their keeper who he beat comfortably. An equalizer from Alex Mount, a powerful shot from Katie McVey and a well taken goal by Sam Whiffin swooping on a loose pass appeared to suggest HBU 2 could be in for a drubbing, but this team showed all day that they were not going to give an inch, and Latham again responded and after linking well with the energetic George Kohler, beat the keeper at the far post with a long range effort. Alice Osborne scored almost immediately after a long run and shot, just before half time Latham hit the back of the net from a indirect free hit which unfortunately did not count as although passing through a group of players and the goal keeper never touched any of them! The score at halftime as in the previous game was 4-2, however HBU 2 started the second half much the stronger and three quick goals from a marauding Latham, one of them a penalty, saw the second string take the lead. HBU 1 responded immediately and were awarded a penalty which Alex Mount converted and followed up after the restart with a well taken rebound having hit the post with his initial shot. Having got their noses back in front HBU 1 took the game beyond reach with some strong skating and a superior passing game, which saw Katie McVey and Alex Mount add a further three goals each to their tallies. A late consolation goal from Luke Latham who latched onto a pin point diagonal ball from Kier Maeers made the final score 13-6 to HBU 1. It was a game you could tell all the players enjoyed immensely and they came off the rink to the loudest applause of the day.
Game 3 for HBU 2 saw them up against the form horses and eventual winners of the Shield Bury, who were also able to field second claim players from Peterborough Club. This was a tough test and although beaten 10-1, (Kier Maeers scoring with a neat flick over the keeper on the final whistle) HBU 2 made Bury work very hard. Special mention should be made here of the effort put in by Joshua Butcher in this match who got amongst the Bury players for the entire game. He chased every ball and never ducked a challenge, despite at 10 years of age being only half the size of one or two of the Bury players. He drew a lot of admiring comments from the Bury coach after the game, and should be very proud of his contribution. Another player who should be proud of his contribution is David Martindale, who playing in goal for the first time pulled off some great saves in this game, in particular a magnificent double save from a penalty early in the first half.
HBU 2's final game was the last of the day, against the host side Farnham. HBU 2 ran out comfortable 14-0 winners in this game which saw Luke Latham add a further 9 goals to his haul for the day. Also on the score sheet were Josh Butcher (2) and one a piece for Kier Maeers, George Kohler and Nathan Emslie.
At the end of a day enjoyed by all the players and their Mums and Dads who made the trip, the final positions were: 1st Bury, 2nd HBU 1, 3rd Cottenham, 4th HBU 2, 5th Farnham

The first Southern Counties Under 13's tournament of the season was held on Sunday at the Pier. Herne Bay United have two under 13's teams competing; Everlast and JK Metals, as well as an under 11's teams, Kent Connections. The first match was between Everlast and JK Metals, with the former quickly taking control of the game. A first half hat-trick for Max Osborne, two for Kier Maeers and one for Sam Whiffen gave them a commanding 6-0 lead at the break. JK Metals were able to pressure more in the second half and Luke Latham scored to give them hope but two more for Maeers as well as one each for Osborne and Whiffen put the result beyond doubt. Final score Everlast 10-1 JK Metals.
The second game saw Kent Connections facing the relatively inexperienced team of East Grinstead. Some excellent team work allowed Jamie McVey to open the scoring soon followed by two from Josh Butcher. Although East Grinstead then got a goal of their own, Kent Connections continued to pressure their opponents and with Connor Botting, Oliver Hudson, Butcher and Tom Barton all netting before half time, the under 11's had a 7-1 lead at the break. The goal scoring was not so prolific in the second half but Botting claimed his hat-trick with no reply from East Grinstead making Kent Connections the 9-1 winners.
Everlast were then back in action against another inexperienced team, Farnham. Everlast scored continually throughout the first half; a hat-trick for Whiffen, four for Maeers and five for Osborne, to which Farnham could find no reply giving a half time lead of 12-0. Everlast played most of the second half with three outfield players to offer a fairer game and although Farnham did score one consolation goal a hat-trick for Nathan Emslie, two for Whiffen and one each for Osborne and Maeers gave a 19-1 victory.
Next it was another derby game, this time with JK Metals facing Kent Connections. The older JK Metals team took advantage of their younger club-mates in the first half, with Latham scoring four and Michael Gregory two. However, Kent Connections pressured throughout the second half through some excellent passing and, although Latham scored again, Botting and Barton were able to net for the under 11's to give them a very credible score of JK Metals 7 - 2 Kent Connections.
After a break for Farnham and East Grinstead to play each other, the final derby of the day took place between Everlast and Kent Connections. Everlast had proved to be the stronger of the under 13 sides during the tournament but the younger Kent Connections team really made them work for their goals during this match. Their good teamwork restricted their opponents to three goals in the first half; two for Osborne, one for Maeers. Everlast were able to make the most of their age over their tiring opponents in the second half although they were only able to add five; two each for Whiffen and Osborne, one for Maeers. Everlast won 8-0, their smallest triumph of the day.
JK Metals then played Farnham. The inexperience of the visitors showed although they put their strongest performance of the tournament. David Martindale opened the scoring with his hat-trick and, although Farnham had got one back, Charlie Botting added two more before half time. The second half was more even with two goals for Martindale and two for Farnham, giving JK Metals a 7-3 win.
The final game of the day was between Everlast and East Grinstead. Again there was a flurry of goals evenly spread over the two halves. Whiffen scored five, Osborne four and Maeers six with East Grinstead only getting one in reply to leave Everlast the 15-1 winners. This tournament's results put Everlast in 1st, JK Metals 2nd, Kent Connections 3rd, Farnham 4th and East Grinstead 5th. The next tournament takes place on 31 January.
Teams:
Everlast: Nathan Emslie, Kier Maeers, Guy Osborne, Max Osborne, Sam Whiffen
JK Metals: Charlie Botting, Charlie Burgess, Michael Gregory, George Kohler, Luke Latham, David Martindale
Kent Connections: Tom Barton, Connor Botting, Josh Butcher, Luca Commentucci, Oliver Hudson, Jamie McVey, Rhys Young

During the October half term break Herne Bay United Roller Hockey and Skating Club worked with Canterbury City Council to run a fun roller hockey day 10-3 pm at Kings Junior School in Sturry. The day was a huge success, bookings were taken in advance and spaces were filled several days before the event. There were 26 local children, aged between 8 and 14, with a varied range of skating abilities participating. The objective of the day was to provide a taste of the sport to beginners and further develop those children who already enjoy the sport. Coaching was provided by Herne Bay United's senior team player Brendan Barker and Herne Bay United and National Coach Patricia Osborne, who kept the children active and challenged throughout the day.
A fun day was had by all, and it is hoped to repeat the camp in future school holidays. Herne Bay United would like to thank Canterbury City Council Sports Development Team and Kings Junior School for their support in staging the first event of this kind.

United travelled one short after one player went AWOL, Joel De Figueiredo. Manchester is never an easy fixture to play and results are historically ground out for United. The rink is very different than United's home rink and always proves difficult and this fixture was to be no different with water coming through the ceiling providing a further obstacle to the adjustment to the small size of the rink. United began well but struggled to beat Manchester's keeper Darren Whiteley and after a number of wild shots and chances going array it was United's veteran Nigel Mills, who has recently returned from retirement to score United's first of the game. Over the course of the first half United were in complete control and went 0-4 up with two goals from Brendan Barker and one from Neil Austin. However unforced errors were beginning to show and the result of playing the previous evening and travelling such a distance with a man down was beginning to show. Manchester capitalized on two of these errors scoring twice in quick succession through Crowther and Jean Delprat. United regained some composure with a well finished slap shot from captain Simon Hosking and a cool finish from Austin to give him his second of the game and finishing the half 2-6.
United came out of the blocks slow with Manchester taking the early initiative and the usual toing and froing game that takes place at Manchester looked to have begun with two further goals from Manchester's Delprat, bringing Manchester within reach of United. United's captain stepped up for the second time to put some daylight between the two teams with Barker shortly adding to Hosking's bringing United 4-8 in front, but again the thorn in United's side Delprat released another surprise shot and notching his fourth of the game. United now had to move up a gear to kill the game and showed why they are champions bringing the final score to 5-11 with Austin getting his hat-trick and Barker netting twice in 17 seconds and eventually winning by a convincing score line. Herne Bay United now go top of the Premier League and will spend the next few weeks preparing for their European Cup game away to Italy Giovinazzio on the 21 November where they aim to create a European upset.
HBU Manager Phil McVey said: "This was a really tough weekend for the team - a late finish Saturday night and a 5.30am start in the morning, plus a 600 mile drive round trip was always going to be a problem. We have played better, and there's plenty of room for improvement, but I can't complain. I have to say that our keeper Dave Garlick was exceptional both games. Reigning champions Herne Bay United faced two tough games at the weekend; the first game was against local rivals Herne Bay on Saturday evening, the second against title hopefuls Manchester on Sunday lunchtime in Manchester. Herne Bay were the first opponents, under the tutelage of manager Helio Dos Santos, and with a new player from Portugal they were always going to be difficult side to beat. However United settled down into the game well, moving the ball around and probing for openings. With 16 minutes left in the first half captain Simon Hosking finished a well worked move to put United 0-1 in front. In the next three minutes Hosking punished twice more to make it 0-3 with 12 minutes remaining in the half. However the 'Bay' regrouped and were awarded a Direct Free Hit after United's Neil Austin was sin binned for two minutes following a challenge on Dave Todd. Todd took the resulting free hit but United Keeper Dave Garlick pulled off a fine save. United managed to keep the Bay from scoring in the two minute powerplay. The Bay were now getting into the game, and were creating a few chances of their own. With five minutes remaining in the half, they were awarded a penalty. This time Danny Butcher stepped up, but again Garlick made a fine save to deny the Bay a goal. Spurred on my the penalty save United stepped up the pace and in the final four minutes Brendan Barker scored twice to make the half time score 0-5.
The second half saw the Bay change their defensive tactics (from a zonal defence to man-to-man). The change in tactics worked and they managed to keep out the champions for 15 minutes. Direct Free Hits were awarded to both teams during this period, as both sides reached 10 team fouls during the match, but neither team could find the back of the net. United though were slowly building pressure and creating chances, the Bay could not hold them off and with 11 minutes left in the match Barker made it 0-6. He scored again three minutes later to make it 0-7, and veteran Paul McVey made it 0-8 with a clinical finish from the penalty spot with five minutes remaining in the match. The Bay now were just looking for a consolation goal, and despite United again going down to three players after Barker was sin-binned for a tackle on Tiago Sousa, the Bay could not find a way through United's defence and the game ended 0-8 in HBU's favour.
Following the game Herne Bay captain Peter Halvorson said: "Last season they thrashed us, so tonight was a huge improvement, we are getting better every game, we are looking to finish in the top three this year."

What it is about CSL and Manchester? Last years trip to the Arcadia was eventful, and again this year the trip started off ominously, with a phone call from the Mini Bus Hire Company, at 8.30 Saturday morning, informing us that the mini bus we had booked had broken down, in their yard. Fortunately this was better than last year, when it broke down on the motorway at 2 o'clock on the Sunday morning. We then rushed to Plan B, with two cars travelling, but unfortunately only able to accommodate eight players, seven out players and one goal keeper. One of our goal keepers had to be dropped. However we arrived at the Arcadia in time and in good spirits.
The game commenced at a good pace with CSL moving the ball and passing well, with Manchester attempting to press us back into our half. We counter attacked, Charlie Pughe opening the scoring after four minutes. However twenty seconds later Manchester levelled, there followed a further goal for CSL by Joe Fidock and another from Manchester. The first half carried on in this theme, with further goals from Myles Tichband, Joe King and Tom Hawkins. With the half time score Manchester 7–6 HBU CSL, the team felt quite confident that they would be able to maintain the pressure and felt that the game was winnable.
The second half started in the same fashion, but two minutes into the half and due to confusion in defence, the ball was taken from our defenders and put in the back of the net. However CSL responded with an individual goal scored from a trade mark slap shot by Joe Fidock. Manchester responded positively and started to tighten up their defence, pushing CSL harder, with CSL's apprentice goal keeper, Joel Carnell, beginning to tire, Manchester went on to score five goals in the last five minutes with only one in response from CSL. The final score was Manchester 16-8 HBU CSL. This was due in the main to poor defending from our tiring players and goal keeper alike. However it was an enjoyable game despite the result and the team came away in good spirits, knowing that we have plenty to work on. The Team Fouls recorded were 13 to CSL and 8 to Manchester, however the game was played with a good sporting attitude.
Team: Joe Fidock (2), Charlie Pughe (1), Alfie Sheppard, Tom Hawkins (1), Lee Chestnutt, Myles Tichband (3), Joe King (1), Joel Carnell (GK)

Reigning champions Herne Bay United took on the England under 17's in their first premier league game of the season. HBU were looking to hit the ground running and despite some early possession from the national side, who have entered into the Premier League to aid their development, it was United who struck first; Brendan Barker scoring four goals in the first ten minutes. England then re-focused their efforts in defence and they managed to shut out United for the next ten minutes. However they could not sustain it and in the final five minutes of the half United added a further six goals, three from veteran striker Paul McVey, two from Barker, and one from Joel Defiguruado who was making his debut for the champions. It wasn't all one way as England did manage to score with 42 seconds remaining in the half, a well taken finish from Keiran Brady to make the half time score Project 2010 1–10 HBU.
After the break it was England who created the early chances, they were moving the ball around well and were winning the 50/50 tackles. HBU had started the second half slowly and were duly punished when, with 20 minutes remaining Liam Conroy kept his nerve to finish from close range to make the score 2–10. HBU were not at their best, and despite immediately responding with a goal from Neil Austin, England continued to put pressure on the champion's defence. Then with 15 minutes left England were awarded a penalty, which Liam Conroy despatched into the top right hand corner of the net to make it 3–11. Again United responded immediately with Karl Smith scoring from close range to make it 3–12. Determined to stamp their authority on the game United stepped up the pace and in the last ten minutes they scored six more unanswered goals to make the final score Project 2010 3–19 HBU.
Following the game HBU captain Simon Hosking said: "We are pleased to get our campaign off to a winning start. We were definitely not at our best, and we know we need to improve. But the performance gives us something to build on. England U17's are not a bad side, and there were stages in the game where they pushed us back and created chances, they could provide a few shocks this season. The result was never in doubt though, we have goals throughout the team. It was especially pleasing to see our new signing Joel Defigurado getting on the score sheet. We have a big squad this season, and all the players know they will have to fight for their place. Our youngest player today was Joel (18) and our oldest player today was Nigel (41). It should be an interesting season."
England Coach Carlos Amaral said: "I am pleased with the performance, to me the result is not important, HBU are the best side in the country. It is the manner of our play that is important. The boys showed discipline in attack and defence. There were times when HBU over ran us, but on the whole it was a good performance. We are in the league for experience, we will learn from each game, and hopefully improve, we are building for the U17 European Championships, to be held in Rotherham next year. The team will be tested this year, that's exactly what I want."
HBU manager Phil McVey said: "It is good to get the first game out of the way with a win. We were far from our best. At times we showed glimpses of the hockey we are capable of. We will need to improve if we are to retain our title. However, we had three players playing today who were not in the squad last year. Veterans Paul McVey (40) and Nigel Mills (41), who have both been performing well in the veteran's side were selected for the first time in over a decade, and youngster Joel Defigurado was also making his debut for the club. It just goes to show you that if you are good enough, age is irrelevant. It sends a message out to all my players that no one’s place in the team is secure. All three of the debutants played well, Paul scored four with Joel netting once. As for England, I have to say I was impressed. They showed they have ability, and even more important, they showed they have the temperament to handle pressure. To face the champions and to put up the fight they did showed great character. If they can continue to learn and develop, they stand every chance of making it to the final in the Euro championships next year. I wish them every success."
HBU team: Dave Garlick (GK), Karl Smith (2), Simon Hosking (c) (1), Joel Defigurado (1), Neil Austin (2), Nigel Mills, Brendan Barker (9), Paul McVey (4), Matt Barton. Manager: Phil McVey

Herne Bay United Roller Hockey & Skating Club is pleased to announce that it has obtained CASC (Community Amateur Sports Club) status with H M Revenue and Customs. The benefit to the club is that any donations to the club attract tax relief to individuals, sole traders and partnerships through the gift aid scheme or as a tax deductible expense before profits for companies. Gift Aid works by providing income tax relief to individuals, sole traders and partnerships on their gift or donation and allowing HBU to reclaim income tax on the gift from HMRC provided the donor is a UK taxpayer. The amount of tax benefit depends on whether the individual, sole trader or partnership pays income tax at the basic or higher rate. In both cases the club will receive an additional £28 for every £100 donated in the form of a tax rebate from HMRC. Furthermore, in the case of a higher tax payer, £25 will be refunded for every £100 he or she gives. This means between the club and individual they could benefit from a total tax refund of over £53.
If you wish to make a donation to the club to allow us to further develop roller hockey and roller dance in Herne Bay please contact the club treasurer, Kym Marsh, or Jon Barton.

Referees of all levels took advantage of this opportunity to test out the New Rules and players, too, experienced the implications of playing under them over the two day event. Unfortunately there were more refs in attendance on day 1 than day 2 but they all appreciated the exercise. Thanks to all of them.
Timekeepers, too, found the experience invaluable and it was a shame more did not attend on at least one of the days. One thing was evident from the weekend was that clubs will need three people on the timekeepers' table to ensure efficiency for all matches and tournaments. Thank you to those who did attend.
